I would like to know how to design a sturdy open shelf bookcase.  In
particular I am looking for detial drawings and or hardware which will

After an extensive web search, I was surprised to discover that there
weren't more plans out there for open bookcases. However, I did find
one plan that fits your criteria, and comes in the form of a book,
complete with a list of supplies/hardware needed.

Popular mechanics also has a series on furntiture construction.
