When in junior high, we had lunch hour movies and I saw this movie,
probably late 50s or early 60s vintage. I remember it only vaguely. It
might have been British, but was certainly sci-fi about a space
expedition, maybe to the moon or Mars. On the way, there's this big
problem and I think in order to save the rest someone had to stay
behind and die in space. I remember scenes of the disabled spaceship
just hanging there against the stars. Not a great film, but to me it
is literally unforgettable. I'd like to try to get a copy. Any ideas
as to the title? |

Do you happen to recall any other details, even if they are minor
ones?
Such as - was it in color or B&W? Was it a short film or a feature
film? Did it seem to be part of a serial?

It was in color, I believe, feature length and not a series. It did
have a rather good musical score and took itself quite seriously.
We're not talking "Flash Gordon" here.

You mentioned that is was a full length movie, but in your original
question you said it was a "lunch hour movie". Would I be right in
assuming that it was a maximum of one hour long? If so, could it have
been a Twilight Zone episode or something along that line? Do you
recall any character names or anything of the sort?

Hello,
sorry... trying to probe your memory a bit...
what was so 'unforgettable' about it?
The shape of the space ship? Was it big like a space station or small
carrying perhaps 4 people? Any robot in the story?

This was a feature length movie -- we children watched it after lunch
(we had to buy cheap tickets) a piece at a time. Over several days, we
got the whole movie.
The ship was fairly small and was not remarkable. I got the impression
that the movie was set in the near future. The crew consisted of
several individuals whom I can't recall. No robots or ray guns or
gee-whiz stuff. It impressed me all these decades because it was the
highest quality scifi this kid had seen to that point. But I haven't
seen this on anyone's "best of" lists because I think it was a
commercial flop, possibly British and earnestly boring to those
looking for monsters and flying saucers. For example, "Woman in the
Moon" and "Just Imagine" are very worthy scifi films in their way, but
who's even heard of them? This is another one off the popular radar
screen.

Could this be the plot of the movie you are searching for?:
After some time in space, three American astronauts head for home,
only to find that their retro-rockets won't fire and they can't get
into the proper orbit to land. NASA attempts a rescue, but there is
only enough air in the capsule for two of the three astronauts to last
long enough for the rescue ship to arrive, so one of the three
astronauts must leave the ship and sacrifice himself. Also a hurricane
on the ground is complicating NASA's rescue plans.
This film is in color, released shortly after the moon landing, and at
the time was praised for its good acting and verisimilitude. Now its
age shows and it seems kind of clunky and poorly acted. It starred
some relatively big names of the time.
If this is the movie you are thinking of I will post the full
information about the movie as an answer.
