The power options on my Gateway 500S doesn't seem to work properly -
it will not go into the standby mode automatically. I can put it into
standby manually, but it will not time itself into standby.

Also, which operating system are you using?

Thank,

Hi bill1953,

In case you haven't done it yet, go through Gateway's tutorial and
confirm that your settings are correct:

Gateway Support:
http://service.gateway.com/gateway/step/1,,5+26+35991+34528+25277+19009,00.html

If it still doesn't work -

1. Does your screensaver come on automatically?
2. Is this a new problem that previously worked, or it has never
worked?
3. If it used to work, what did you do (install, uninstall, upgrade,
etc) before you first realized it was no longer working?

Try the tutorial above - if it works, let me know and I'll post this
as an answer. If it doesn't work, please answer the three questions
above and add any other clues you can think of.

Thanks,
hummer

Are you running a processor-intensive task in the background?
Distributed computing projects (SETI@Home, RC5, Folding@Home) may
interfere with the sleep timer. This happens to me on my Mac - I set
the Sleep Timer to 20 minutes, but the computer stays on for hours
when SETI is running. When SETI is off, the sleep timer works
normally.

The system may also have power settings in the BIOS which can
interfere with the Windows power settings. Internet activity, modem
activity, the cat bumping your mouse, background tasks, are all things
that can seem like activity and keep the computer awake.
