It has to be this CD and no other. The tracks on this CD were played
on the little organ in St Jakobi in Lubeck in 1947. They were one of
the first recordings made by Archiv. They were later superceded by
other recordings on other organs (all of which I have). To my
knowledge these early recordings only made it on to one CD. I have the
CD box - all I am missing is the CD.

I have e-mailed the CD vendor asking for the recording locale of the newer CD.
Meanwhile, I'll continue searching for 429 935-2.

Good news!

It is indeed the same recording. Deutsche Gramophon (who own Archiv)
have re-released many of the older recordings from Archiv under the
Deutsche Gramophon Originals label.

You can purchase the recording at musica.co.uk for 9 pounds.

http://www.musica.co.uk/musica/screen__PRODUCT/category__CL176857.htm

Enjoy. Any recording by Walcha is fine listening, this one must be
particularly excellent.

Nice try but no cigar.

These are NOT the same recordings. I already have this CD. Most of
these these recordings were made later on a different organ (Sep.
1956, Alkmaar, Holland)
whereas the ones I want were made in approx Aug. 1947, Lübeck and
appear on the CD with the catalogue number I have quoted.

This is why I specified twice that a substitute would not do.

You will not find a modern printing of the 1947 tracks because
DG/Archiv have destroyed/mislaid the master tape. If a copy exists
then it will be second-hand or in a library somewhere. I have a CD box
missing a CD. I cannot be the only person in the world who has a copy
of this CD.

I regret the problem. I was simply quoting the musica.co.uk
representative.
I have no other way of verifying the content of the CD. I have
emailed them again for further information. Should they prove to have
been mistaken in their intial description, I shall have the Google
editors withdraw my answer.

Hi Nellie

I apologise for the terseness of my reply but I am in a bit of hurry.

You've made two, in my opinion, erroneous assumptions about me and my
question.
Your first assumption was that I didn't really know what I wanted.
I've said twice that "It has to be this CD and no other". I said this
because I know and I have informed you that it is no longer in print.
Despite this you have offered me substitute recordings. At the risk of
sounding abrasive, if I wanted a substitute I would have asked for
one.

Your second assumption is that www.musica.co.uk would know better than
I. I find this a little insulting. They are, after all, a retail
outlet. I could be a Professor of Music with an abiding fascination
with Walcha and his recordings. If you cannot take my word for it,
look at the photographic reproduction of the jewel case on Amazon you
will see at the bottom that the recordings were made in Alkmaar - not
Lubeck.

If you do not have access to sources which could find this CD for me
then I think a full refund is appropriate. It's not a lot of money but
it will stick in my craw if I have to pay for redundant information
and I will not be encouraged to use this service again. I will
possibly repost the question at a higher rate if it requires more
extensive research.

best regards

Mark

I shall, as I stated previously, ask the Google editors to withdraw my
answer, since you believe my information to be erroneous and obviously
are displeased with my efforts and assume I have no knowledge of music
despite the fact that I could be a graduate of Julliard.

However, I should like to point out that the CD you refer to at Amazon
(Polygram Records - #457704) is NOT the same as the one in the Musica
catalog (DG 457 704-2), which, in a second email, Musica reiterated as
a re-lease of
Activ 429 935-2.

I have emailed DG for further clarification but am told one may not
expect an answer from DG for one or two weeks.

Please also note that I have searched and/or telephoned more than 30
vendors of classical music(several of them dealing only in rare or
out-of-print recordings)in the North America, Europe and South Africa
on your behalf.

I am sorry that you are displeased.

Nellie,

While I apologise for the tone of the email which you have obviously
taken personally I am at a loss to how to take your statement
that:(Polygram Records - #457704) is NOT the same as the one in the
Musica catalog (DG 457 704-2)
How do these differ?

http://www.musica.co.uk/musica/screen__PRODUCT/category__CL176857.htm

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000613W/o/qid=1039620659/sr=2-1/ref=sr_bt_1/202-0614171-5176619

I don't see how the 'Originals' CD can be a re-release of Archiv 429
935-2 as Musica claim. It does not even have the same track listing
(missing Triosonate No 6. BWV 530). Either Musica have misled you or
they are privy to information which contradicts the sleeve
information. What's probably happened is that DG have decided that the
older recordings (1947) are inferior to the newer ones and can be
safely replaced in the catalog by newer versions. I disagree but I am
obviously in the minority.
On balance though I appreciate the effort you've put into this, I
shall not be requiring a refund and shall mark the answer for effort
rather than results.

Best regards

Mark

Well, at least I see part of the problem. You were looking at
Amazon.com.UK and I at Amazon.com. in the USA.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000613W/qid=1039616880/sr=2-2/ref=sr_2_2/002-4379898-4384020#product-details

Indeed, the listing at Amazon UK does appear to be the same as that
listed at musica. Ergo, I was misled by musica.

So, let me pursue the few more leads I have, although I don't hold out
much hope of finding the original. Parnassus, which as I'm sure you
know, specializes in out-of-print recordings has not seen a copy in
more than five years. They would be happy to create a "want list"
entry for you, should you wish.
http://www.parnassusrecords.com/wantlist.htm

Thank you for the rating on effort, but I should like to find this
recording for you.

Mark--

I have been to 47 sites. I have no more ideas. I'm beginning to
believe you are, indeed, the last person to have a vestige of this CD.
I've registered with several search sites. Maybe that will yield
something, although I'm doubtful. I did not register with Parnassus
search. Did you? Do you wish me to? We've even got one of the
Researchers in Lubeck looking for it there.

I've not investigated libraries... if a copy could be found in a
library would you want to borrow and copy it?

Have you contacted the various organ societies, perhaps posting a
notice on bulletin boards there? I checked a couple with CD catalogs
with no luck.

Except for waiting for replies from the searches, I'm going to have to
leave off from the search. Do keep the question open so that we can
post anything that might come in in the next few weeks.

Let me know if you have any fresh ideas.

(I don't know how valuable this information will be, 2 years late!)

I know where to obtain a recording: it is available for loan from one
of the Randwick Libraries, in Sydney, Australia.

http://lib.councilsonline.com.au/randwick/webquery.dll?v1=pbMarc&v2=PRATCHETT&v4=0&v5=5A&v8=650&v9=0&v10=N&v11=0&v13=4A&v20=4&v23=1&v25=BACH%20and%20%20WALCHA&v27=25411&v29=5A&v35=N&v40=648&v46=650

(Although the catalogue entry says the year is 1954, the actual
recording date according to the CD label, and the CD booklet, is 1947.
1954 is the (P) date.)

Contact information for the library (I borrowed it from Bowen Library) is at:
http://www.randwick.nsw.gov.au/Library/contact.php

I have the CD in my hand as I type this, and it appears to be the one sought.
Its catalogue number is the same.
It is published by Archiv Produktion.
It is marked as Mono.
It was recorded on the little organ in St Jakobi in Lübeck, 1947.
The CD is in reasonable condition. There are scratches on the disc.
There appear to be small pin-point scratches to the silver reflective
layer (this is bad), but it is definitely playable.

P.S. Would any one happen to know when the CD was first released? That
information isn't readily available on the CD.

I am still interested. As you are holding a copy in your hand is it
the case that you've borrowed it from the library?
I'm very impressed.

Yes, I borrowed it and found this thread while I was researching it. I
still have it in my possession. The scratches turned out to be
superficial; I ripped the CD using EAC on secure mode, Test & Copy,
with no problems (i.e. a perfect digital copy can be retrieved from
the disc).

As I am only interested in the music and DG have destroyed the master
tapes I have absolutely no qualms in asking you to send me a copy of
the CD. I originally paid 25 dollars for an unsatisfactory answer so
I am willing to pay at least that for a copy. Please let me know your
thoughts on this. To facilitate matters please contact me on my
personal email address: markpeatfield@o2.co.uk
I am intrigued. Are you interested in Walcha? or did you see locating
the recording as a worthy challenge?

best regards
