Dear dogsbollixxx-ga,

If you don't mind I'll start at the beginning of creating a document.
Excuse me if you know some of this already. As you know Word has many
sophisticated functions and I'm going to show you a very basic way of
solving your problem.

When you create a new document it has default properties i.e. type of
font, size of font etc. Think about what format you would use most
when opening up a new Word document. This will be your default style.
You create the default style by going to the top row of the toolbar,
FORMAT> FONT> There you can select type of font, font style, size,
colour and other effects. There is a preview box to assess if that is
what you require.

For this exercise select ' ARIAL ' from the drop down box; size 12;
regular; colour: auto. Once you are happy with the font, press>
DEFAULT. It will ask you if you wish to set this font as default.
Click> YES. This has now set as the properties for every new document
you open.

To test this go to FILE> NEW> (If you have a tab titled 'General'
select that) Select> BLANK DOCUMENT. This will open a new blank
document with the font, font style etc., you have selected. Everything
you type now will now be in that style and size.

Type in a few words. To alter the font of those words, highlight them
and then use the drop down boxes on the toolbar to change the font
style and size, or press> B for bold, or> U for underline. Colour is
also on this bar, on mine it is a large letter 'A' with a small arrow
by it. Click on the arrow and select your colour. Then click somewhere
else on the document to remove the highlight.

Alternatively you can change the font etc. before typing anything.
Place your cursor where you want to start typing then select the font,
style etc. from the toolbar. Then start typing. The text will be in
your selected font.

Now for cutting and pasting text so it retains the style of your
document.

Copy your question on this page. Google uses COURIER NEW, font size
10. Now paste it into your document. If you put your cursor in the
middle of the text you’ll see from the toolbar font drop down box it
has retained that style.

Now put your cursor lower down where you want to paste the question.
On the toolbar EDIT> PASTE SPECIAL > select ‘ UNFORMATTED TEXT ’
press > OK. The text will now be pasted in your document in your
default style. You will notice the line endings may have to altered to
fit properly.

You may find it easier to print these instructions out whilst trying
this out.

Thank you, that was very helpful. However, when I paste in a
selection from another more unusual font it always seems to put mine
in differently. A colleague has more fonts on her pc but when I copy
them in I lose the ffect and end up with a more normal font.
Thanks

Dear dogsbollixxx-ga
My fault, I should have also covered this. You've hit the nail on the
head when you say "A colleague has more fonts on her pc". If you do
not have the font loaded on your pc then it cannot re-create your
colleague's font style. Let's say if your colleague has font style
Blackadder ITC and you do not. When you copy that across, becuase you
do not have that font installed on your computer WORD will select your
default and put it in that style in the document. Therefore you need
to load that font on to your computer. Depending on which type of WORD
your using, additional fonts may be on your original Windows disc, or
you could copy it off your colleagues computor, or you download them
of the internet by using these search terms:
fonts +download
://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=fonts+download
Or you can buy CDs with many hundreds on fonts on them very cheaply.
(This will probably be quicker timewise).
fonts +cd

My 2 cents with regards to fonts, the more you have installed the
slower your computer seem to go, also there(from my experience) seems
to be more computer problems the more fonts too. I'd pick a few 'cool'
fonts that you want to have at your disposal and either archive some
but not 'load' them until you actually must have to have them.
