Dear Collette,
Ive performed a thorough search in industry reports on the IV
catheter market and this is what Ive been able to conclude based on
industry readings.
The US intravenous catheter market was approximately $630 million per
year in 1998, with an estimated growth rate of 10.2% (1998-2003). The
global intravenous catheter market was estimated to be over about $840
million in 1998, with an estimated growth of 10.4% over the same
period. The overall catheter market, which includes renal, coronary,
and infusion catheters, was approximately $2 billion in the US and
$4.4 billion worldwide in 1998. Please refer to the source material
attached below, wherein I also included some additional relevant
information on the market.
I was not able to find the distribution of the IV catheter market in
the US for hospitals, doctors offices, etc., however, I found
supporting information to indicate that hospitals are the biggest
consumers for catheters in general, in Europe. My approximation
indicates that they could consume over 30% of the catheters. See
attached information.
Finally, if you feel this is not sufficient information to answer your
question, please let me know how I can further help you.
I hope this is what you were looking for,
Claudietta

Optinova (Aland islands, Finland), medical plastic tubing
manufacturer, currently holds a 30-40% share of the 1.2 bil units/y
worldwide intravenous (IV) catheter tubing market. However, IV
catheter tubing products currently account for 50% of the company's
production, vs 80% in 1992, and Optinova has diversified into other
areas where its competencies have the greatest value. The company's
plant is being expanded by around one-half to 3,250 sq mt, as output
capacity grows to meet expected demand in the new areas.

Hospitals will remain the largest European end-use market for medical
disposables as inpatient facilities continue to deliver the most
diverse range of product intensive procedures. However, incentives
promoting alternative site and home care will result in all other
markets growing faster. The home healthcare segment will expand at a
particularly strong pace based upon the availability of new consumer
testing and drug delivery products.
