I am looking for an automation devices or electronics (web) shop that
would ship the following items to Finland.

I have an idea of building a simple device that needs a pin or knob
that would move at a certain time. Basically it would be a digital
timer and alarm clock connected to a small battery operated device
that would control the pin. In other words, instead of making noise
the clock would move the pin.
The direction of the movement doesn't matter much, but it could come
out of a hole and go back immediately, for example. The movement
should be at least 2 millimeters, ideally 5mm and not more than 25mm
(one inch). It should be silent.

It the device becomes usable, we might start to manufacture and sell
them. The clock would be a visible part of the product, so it should
look nice and be very easy to use.

I would be surprised to find this in one ready box, so I am prepared
to build it myself. Instructions for how to connect the parts would
also be needed.

Thanks

Hi,

You didn’t say what you were going to use this for. So I don’t think
you’ll get a great answer. However, if we’re talking about an
invention of some sort perhaps it is/was best you not/didn't reveal
your intentions. Aside from that, you might look into digital
sprinkler controllers that hook up to a garden hose bib and are
battery powered. They have a solenoid that opens and closes a valve
that you can rig to work for your application. A solenoid is a linear
actuator that operates via an electromagnet coil of wire that has a
plunger that pushes out or pulls in via magnetic attraction. There
are also industrial devices that are specifically designed to do what
you are talking about. Try searching Google. Hear is a search I did:

Go to advanced search:

In the top box type: digital timer relay solenoid batteries

In the domain box type: com

You will then need to look at each one and see who deals
internationally. Take this hit for example from Deep Sea Electronics.

http://www.deepseaplc.com

Which is:

http://www.deepseaplc.com/files/560-ul.pdf

They have distributors all over the world.

With 349 hits, I’m sure you will find something in those search
results.

One thing I always do when I’m going to build something is look at
what the surplus vendors have available. Gadgets from surplus venders
are great for experimenting around and developing your ideas. Find
the “Small Digital Clock And Timer Relay” on this page:

From The Electronics Goldmine which ships internationally.

You should be able to disconnect the AC ( Alternating Current ) part
of this and apply battery power. This is because most electronic
devices that run on AC, convert to DC ( Direct Current ) DC is also
what you get from a battery. But before you try this, and since your
venturing into electronics, I would recommend finding a copy of
“Getting Started in Electronics” by Forrest M. Mims III. It is the
worlds best electronics book for beginners. I first learned using
this book twenty or so years ago. It’s out of print, but it’s so
popular that you should be able to find a copy if you look around.
Good luck with your idea!

All the best,
James

Thanks James! I don't know why you posted this as a comment, since it
answers my question quite well. I was lacking the right keywords,
which I would have said in my question, but I got them anyway. This
was my first question at Google Answers, but likely not the last one.
