Hello minnow1~
Search engines regularly shuffle websites around on their lists, so
that's not too unusual. However, there are a number of things you can
do to help improve your ranking.
I do not recommend sites that promise to submit your website to a
large number of search engines (AddMe, for example:
http://www.addme.com and SubmitIt: http://www.submitit.com ); you can
easily do this yourself, and you'll almost certainly do it more
effectively, too, since mass submissions rarely produce the sort of
careful, productive results web site owners hope for.
You say you are already listed on Google, but it wouldn't hurt to
submit elsewhere. Here's the link to Yahoo's submit
page:http://docs.yahoo.com/info/suggest Also submit your site to MSN,
LookSmart, About, or HotBot. If you list with any one of these, your
site should show up on the others soon. (To find out how to submit to
any search engine, go to their home page and look for a link--often at
the bottom of the page--that says something along the lines of
"submit" or "suggest a site."
You can improve your chances of being at the top of the search engine
results by using key words near the tops of your pages. But you need
to be careful not to overdo it, or you'll be accused of keyword
spamming. Definitely *do not* list keywords at the tops of your pages
in the same color as the background, hoping that only the search
engine will be able to read the text; this is grounds for complete
removal from many search engines. The keywords should be in the body
of the normal, reader-friendly text on your website.
An oft-overlooked "trick" is to also use your page titles to list
keywords.
Metatags should also be considered; for more complete information on
those, please visit the answer to an older question posted on this
site: https://answers.google.com/answers/main?cmd=threadview&id=109051
But it sounds like you're already on the right track with keywords and
meta tags. So consider this: Possibly the most important and effective
way to improve your ranking is by linking with other sites. Many
search engines pay attention to how many other web sites link to you
and take it as a sort of recommendation of your site. So constantly be
on the lookout for similar yet noncompetitive sites that you can
exchange links with. Add their link to your website and simply write
the webmaster, notifying them of the link and asking them to
reciprocate.
Lots of linking within your own site will also make it easier for
search engines (and potential viewers) to discover more about you and
your site. Some search engine "crawlers" will respond well to a page
on your website devoted to links to all of your URLs. The page
shouldn't have viewable text, except for links to each page on your
site. It should be connected to your home page.
