Hello jim1946-ga,

I've started researching your question and discovered that it's a
fairly complex topic. See this article as an example:
http://www.ballardspahr.com/press/article.asp?ID=507

What aspect of pharmaceutical compliance would you like me to focus
on? The more information you can share about your topic, the more
likely I'll be able to give you a productive answer. I look forward to
working on your question.

In the Pharma industry, to simplify it, there are two types of drugs,
prescription, and over the counter. I want to address the cycle
[simplified] -- In the prescription category a drug is prescribed by
a doctor, the patient goes to the pharmacy to have it filled, and the
patient picks it up, and if all is working s/he takes the medicine
(compliance) and then gets it refilled (refills already issued, or
back to a doctor for the cycle). About 50 percent of the people who
get the medicine in the their hands, don’t finish taking it properly.

The two areas that impact loyalty in the Rx pharma industry are
compliance (taking the proper dosage, at the correct time of day, the
proper number of times per day/week, in the correct manner – w/wo
food) and persistency (renewing the script at appropriate intervals).

The ideal loyalty program would enroll a patient with the initial
script and help them establish “habits” that would leverage maximum
compliance. And then provide patient with benefits and rationale of
persistency. And, create a way to get data on patient persistency and
compliance over time.

I am trying to figure out if any company or whatever has been
successful in this endeavor of “breaking the code” and being
successful in the compliance area.

Hello Jim,

Your question led to an interesting exploration of human behavior and
why people will not follow through on behavior that is clearly to
their benefit. My review of the available resource led me to organize
my findings into two categories: technology and
communications/education solutions. I think you will find a wealth of
approaches for dealing with the problem of patient compliance in
following pharmaceutical regimens. Best wishes for the success of your
project.
