Have been getting this Detail on one very inportant file. Other files
in the same folder are OK.

This program has caused an illegal operation. MSPUB caused an invalid
page fault in module MSPUB.exe at 0177:0046e58d

Then it followed with a bunch of "Registers" which I can send you if
you need them. Can you tell me how to fix this "illegal operation"?
Thanks.

Bobbie

Hello PWizard,

Thanks for caring about my ailing file. I didn't answer sooner because
I didn't know about the "Clarify Answer" button until today.

Yes, I did go into the Microsoft Publisher link and, in trying the
various methods, came out of it with problems I didn't even know I
had.

1. I don't how this happened, but I could not get Windows into Safe
Mode because it no longer goes through all those screens with a lot of
copy on them. I used to be able to stop at one of those screens and
click F8 and I could put it into Safe Mode. This ruled out a number of
possible solutions the Microsoft web site recommended trying.

2. I looked through all my .TMP files. When I tried to open them, this
is what I got: "Windows cannot find MSPUB.EXE which is needed for
opening .TMP files."

3. I then went to Start, Find and typed in MSPUB.EXE. Two files showed
up: C:\ProgramFiles\Microsoft Publisher and C:\Publisher. I opened
each one and a blank Publisher page came up for each.

4. My damaged file is so frozen that I cannot select File, Edit or
anything else on the Menu. The dreaded "Illegal Operation" window is
always there and if I click on any graphic or text in the file, the
file immediately closes.

I am now trying to duplicate the file which is four pages and heavy on
graphics. It may be impossible because I can't get to pages 2, 3 and
4; and page 1 is half covered by my "Illegal Operation."

If you can think of anything else, I'd sure appreciate it. Thanks so
much for trying, PWizard.

Ho! ho! ho! and a Merry Christmas!

Greetings bobbiebay,

It sounds to me like you possibly have a damaged publisher file.
Please take a look at the following Technet article:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;198256&

...and see if and of the methods outlined help to correct the issue.
Although it's written for Publisher 2000, I believe these methods
should still hold true for Publisher 97. Please let me know your
results. Thanks!

Sincerely,
PWizard

There was a similar posting in 2000 on the Usenet from another user
experienceing the same problem. It's indexed through Google Groups:

"PUB97: Won't open one particular file"
(Newsgroup posting to microsoft.public.publisher)
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&threadm=8d5l68%24dr9%241%40supernews.com&rnum=1&prev=/groups%3Fhl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DUTF-8%26oe%3DUTF-8%26q%3DMSPUB.exe%2Bat%2B0177%253A0046e58d%26sa%3DN%26tab%3Dwg

Since you state that this problem affects only one particular file, it
seems likely that your file is corrupt. The damage may not be fixable
(i.e. there's nothing that you can do to force Publisher to open the
file, no way to stop the program from crashing).

Another posting suggests that you may be able to recover all or part
of the file by using the .tmp backup that Publisher generates while
working or by opening the .pub file in a text editor to at least keep
from having to retype everything.
