What is the problem with my computer when I play card games on-line at
gamecolony.com? My computer is a Pentium II with Windows 98 1st
edition. When I play card games with other people at gamecolony.com
my computer a) will simply freeze b) error message comes up WAOL
illegal operation and screen goes back to desktop c) screen goes blank
in a flash and computer resists being shut off (must cut power).
Lately I've been having problems every second time or so at
gamecolony.
The computer sometimes freezes when playing AOL card games but almost
never when on-line at non-game sites or off-line. The computer also
freezes for my brother when he plays arcade games (with other people).
I do not open attachments on e-mail, and do not have unneccessary
programs running, though NortonProtect is always on and sometimes
AutoProtect. No unfamiliar floppy disks have gone in my computer
recently.
I like gamecolony, so I don't want to stop using it if possible. |

What is the exact error message that appears when it comes up? Is it a
GPF type error message (where the error comes up in a little window
and you have to click OK) or a BSOD type error message (where the
screen changes to a text mode display and lists a bunch of
information, then you have to press a key to return to Windows)?
Do you know what type of video card is in your computer?

The program that runs the video is either part of Windows Media Player
or Windows RealPlayer. The information on my computer is not clear.
Occaisonally, I get a fatal OE error (press any key to continue). The
last two occaisons I played at Gamecolony there was a flash and the
screen went blank, one time completely black, the other time
completely white.

A Fatal Exception 0E is typically a software exception and not caused
by a faulty piece of hardware, which is a good thing.
However, the source of it may be somewhat elusive. When you get the
Fatal Exception 0E message, does it mention a particular file? (i.e.,
"A Fatal Exception 0E has occurred at 0FF76F2A:3BF in DDRAW.VxD")
If not, it could be difficult to track down the program at fault.
First, I would recommend updating or reinstalling the drivers for the
video card and sound card in your computer (if anything is problematic
in these drivers, it will most often be brought to light while playing
a game or watching a video clip of some sort.) If it continues to fail
after those have been updated, then I would recommend uninstalling and
reinstalling Windows Media Player and RealPlayer and/or RealOne
player, whichever you have installed. After that, give it another try
and see if that has any effect.
If you need a hand with updating or reinstalling the video drivers,
I'll need to know what type of video card/sound card you have. This
will be listed in Windows 98's Device Manager. Right click on "My
Computer", and select Properties, then click the "Device Manager" tab.
Click the plus sign [+] next to "Display Adapter" and "Sound, Video,
and Game Controllers", and tell me what it says in those sections. :)
