Question ID: 123585
I am trying to build an Athlon 1.3mhz system
using a Abit KT&a-Raid Mainboard and 512mb of SDRam
I am getting spurios missing files when trying to install the OS -
however all the cd`s are fine.
I have swapped out the CD-Rom, HDD, Mainboard, Ram, Graphics, and PSU
however i still get the same problem,

Error copying file cyclad-z.inf, followed by about 8 or 10 others, if
i skip them the installation eventually blue screens.

I have built dozens of systems, however this one has really got the
better of me.

Any advice?

What disc is giving you this error? Is it the OS disc, or a driver
disc?

What OS are you attempting to load?

Have you tried a new copy of that disc? Since it's always failing at
the same point, it sounds as if you may have corrupt media.

It is falling over during the OS Installation after installing OS from
DOS (cd:\I383\Winnt.wxe)falls over on 13% every time.

However, it happens on every OS i try to install.

The symptoms are that of a computer that is overheating, however the
CPU is reported in the bios as running at 38oC - and the board and
chip wer eonly removed from my old PC 2 weeks ago as part of an
upgrade, they had served me well and had no faults when removed.

I have replaved almost every component there is to replace - and still
cannot isolate the cause.

I have also tried copying the files to the HDD, with no success.

I have used the OS Disks before with no problems and am sure they are
fine.

"I have used the OS Disks before with no problems and am sure they are
fine."

While they may have worked in the past, that is no guarantee that they
are good now. Two things to try: 1) If you have other OS discs
(Win98, Linux, etc), try loading one of them to see if the system can
load *any* OS. 2) Try copying the discs you have now to another PC.
See if they can be copied. If they can be copied, burn the data files
off to a CD-R and try to load the OS from the burned copy.

Several other folks have had this very same problem, as shown by a
search on Google Groups, and it seems to be bad media in every case.

Good luck!

I have tried installing w98, ME and Xp without success.
I have burned off new copies of W98 & XP at X1 to enhance
compatability- No success
I have copied the data files to the HDD - no success

I am 100% sure the media is OK and have tested them on another PC -
namely the one i am currently using, with no problems.

As previously stated, i have also swapped out the HDD, Ram, Processor
and M\B and STILL experience the same error.

As i stated, having built literally hundreds of systems I am at a loss
as to what the problem can be - however I have swapped everything that
can be swapped with the exception of the CASE (Although i HAVE tried a
different PSU).

After reading your latest clarification, it is clear that the problem
is hardware related. I also have encountered a similar problem some
time ago. Similarly, I checked everything and found at that the
problem is that the CPU fan is overheating.
1) Did you check if the heat sink and fan is of the right size for
your processor? A bigger heatsink and fan would be better for an
Athlon.
2) Did you check if the heatsink is very securely attached to the
processor? Make sure that it is and always use a thermal paste for an
Athlon.
3) Did you check if the RAM you are using is compatible with the
motherboard? You can't use a 133 Mhz RAM over a 266 Mhz motherboard.
It might work for a while but it will burn your RAM over time or
worse, damage your motherboard.

Before you do the steps above, please set your BIOS to it's default
settings first.

I Tend to agree that the problem is hardware related.
I heatsink is certainly adequate, and to be honest is overkill as it
is a heatsinc designed for an Athlon XP processor

Curiously though, the fan is spinning but the metal on the cooler is
staying stone cold - they are usually warm \ hot to touch.

The heatsinc is securely attached, i have replaced the chip and fan
numerous times during PD and the chances of me getting it wrong every
time are slim considering the times i have done it before.

I am using Arctic Silver Thermal Paste.

The ram is compatible - it is the ram that was in the machine
prevously 256mb pc 133 sd ram on a pc 133 mainboard - i have also
tried a brand new 512mb PC133 stick of ram with identical results.

The bios is set to fail-safe mode, and i have also tried manually
changeing the setting in the bios - and ever running the 950 chip at
500mhz.

I`m still stuck!!! Come on guys - someone MUST be able to tell me
something i don`t know!!!!

Have you tried changing the IDE cable? You could perhaps get new
cables for this one. If this doesn't work, try a different CD-ROM
drive (still use the new cables) and see if you can install from that
one. If not, you better return to were you bought that processor and
have them check if it is defective.

"Good idea, I have swapped and fiddled with old cables - i recon i
will
get some new ones tomorrow and give those a try!!"

Also, don't forget to try my suggestion regarding the CD-ROM drive. If
this works, please let me know.

Hi there robwales. You don't mention what OS you're installing, but is
it Windows XP SP1? You might want to check that you've created the CD
correctly, if you've built a single CD out of your original XP and SP1
sets.

You could also try copying all the files to hard disk manually, to see
if that produces any read errors.

robwales...

I found posts, in both english and other languages,
where people indicated having the same problem:
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/t1025886638
and:
http://groups.msn.com/wwwwindowsXPnu/netserver.msnw?action=get_message&mview=0&ID_Message=31999&LastModified=4675374849328471915
and:
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&safe=off&selm=247301c243d2%2457bc8140%2435ef2ecf%40TKMSFTNGXA11

Here's the search results:
http://groups.google.com/groups?num=50&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&safe=off&q=cyclad-z.inf&sa=N&tab=wg

There were no solutions offered re the missing files,
however, they were able to ignore the files without
a bluescreen occuring.
That seems to be a separate issue.

Thanks for all your clarifications; I have no idea what could be
causing this error. Good luck finding the solution!

1. is your CD hooked up to a Raid IDE channel? this would be bad.
2. make sure your hard drive(s) is properly jumpered. As stupid as
this sounds, I once had weeks worth of headaches because of a WDC2700
set as master when it was stand-alone.
3. try playing musical chairs with your PCI cards (if any). on-board
resource conflicts can do strange things. If there's any PCI slots
that share resources with your IDE/Raid host controlers, leave them
empty.
4. is your CD on the same IDE channel as your HDD?
5. use a RAM diagnostic util. to confirm that your ram and memory
subsystem are OK. Memtest86 is excellent.
