Sarah Elizabeth (Martin)(Hornsby)(Finley)Hayden was the 1st wife of
Rogers Hornsby, a famous baseball player(1915-31) who is in their Hall
of Fame. Sarah was born & died in Dennison,TX in 1978. Sarah married
Hornsby Sept.23,1918 and divorced him June 12,1923. She married Roy M.
Finley in Feb.,1925. I need her birth & death details. I have one
listing that could be her, but I have no linkage. The listing is:
Sarah M. Finley,born Feb.1,1901,died Dec.15,1978 in Dennison,TX.
SS#448-18-7947.

Hi bluestreak-ga,

I've found a DOB for Sarah (29 June 1900) from a genealogical site,
but I have a couple of questions. Where does the Hayden fit in? Is
that another married name or was that her maiden name? My other
question is in regards to the 1978 year of death? How certain are you
about that one? Thanks!

Regards,
luciaphile-ga

luciaphile,
I'm getting my information from a biography called Rogers
Hornsby by Charles C. Alexander(1995). He's a very respected baseball
author. She was born Sarah Elizabeth Martin in Denison,TX. When
Hornsby began courting her in 1917, she's described as still in her
teens. Towards the end of the book, pp.307, it says that Sarah
Elizabeth Martin Hornsby Finley Hayden survived until 1978, when she
died at Denison, Texas, her hometown. She had married, in order,
Hornsby Finley and Hayden.

Hi bluestreak-ga,

I'm posting this as a comment. Perhaps another researcher can take it
to the finish line.

According to a genealogical site, Sarah Martin was born 29 June 1900

Sarah Elizabeth MARTIN
http://www.my-ged.com/db/page/mclaurin/13160

I emailed the owners of the site and questioned them about Sarah to
see if they could verify where they got their dates from and also if
they had any additional information not on the site. I also questioned
them for any info. on Jeannette Pennington (no go there either).

"The birth information on Sarah Elizabeth Martin is from family
records. The information I have on her death matches what you have
found. Perhaps checking a death certificate filed in the county in
which Denison is located would provide more information.

But there maybe a source where it can be found. Rogers Hornsby is a
part of our family in Hornsby Bend. We have a website dedicated to the
descendants of Reuben Hornsby. On this site there is information about
Rogers as well as pictures of the cemetery including his. There are
contacts on that site that may have more information on his wifes.
Alot of them still live in the Hornsby Bend / Austin area. I'm sure
if anyone would know Joe Hornsby or one of the others would know. The
site is located at http://www.hornsbybend.com/index.htm

If your client is a part of the Hornsby family, they may contact any
of us. We have alot of information and heritage to share.

Rex McLaurin"

Hi luciaphile,
Finally I'm able to communicate with the researchers again.
I've not been able to for about 10 days. So now we can get back to
work! The Hornsby site I've seen before and it did provide me with
good dates about a year and a half ago. It seems to be in error
however in some details. Rogers Hornsby's son, Billy(William
Pennington Hornsby), died in Nashville on June 29,1984. This is
confirmed by the SSDI and Hornsby's bio by Charles A. Alexander
pp.307.(He died in Nashville in 1984 at age 59, following a stoke.)
But I would gladly contact one of the grand-children if I had a means
of contact. If I knew where they one was, I would call them directly.
Any ideas? It's so good to hear from you again, luciaphile!
