Rogers Hornsby was a famous baseball player and is in it's Hall of Fame. On Feb.29,1924, he married his 2nd wife, Mary Jeanette Pennington. She died June 1,1956 in St. Louis,MO. I need her birth details. She had previously married a man named John Hine, a salesman of automobile supplies. She was older than Hornsby, who himself was born Apr.27,1896. |

Hi bluestreak-ga, If there's an answer out there, it probably lies in one of two directions: 1. By contacting Jeannette and Rogers Hornsby's son, who is apparently still alive. Wm Pennington Hornsby http://www.hornsbybend.net/p1121.html 2. By going to microfilm of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch I've e-mailed several people who are doing genealogical research on the Hornsby clan, but no one seems to know much about the second Mrs. Hornsby. What I have turned up puts her in St. Louis for most of her life. I don't have access to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch for the relevant years, but perhaps other researchers do. You probably want to consider raising the price of this question. To get an answer is going to require a researcher to go to a library and hunt through microfilm. I don't know if the St. Louis Post-Dispatch was indexed back in the 1920s. As I'm sure you know yourself, this is time-consuming and not pleasant :( researchers have to figure in the time, effort and expense (if they need to travel somewhere). Researchers: the 2nd Mrs. Hornsby's name is sometimes spelled Jeannette, Jeanette or given as Mary Jeannette, Mary Jeanette. At the time of her affair with Rogers Hornsby, she apparently went by Jeannette Pennington and declined to mention her first spouse. Her mother was good friends with the wife of a St. Louis gangster. Hello luciaphile, You might be right. I've spent my last 7 yrs. sitting at a library microfilm reader. While I'm used to it, others aren't. The other researchers probably haven't noticed, but I have raised the prices on most of the questions I've reposted. But not all of them. I've also not posted many due to lack of interest. If I didn't have so many questions, I could pay more. I need to be ready if a surge of them are answered all at once. You do not know how much I appreciate how much you've done. You not only answered about 12 by yourself, but you've commented on & helped others on about 20 others!! If we can't get a death date on Sarah Martin, I'll credit you anyway for finding her birth date, which is an accomplishment in itself. Let's give others a little while to see if her death date can be found. bluestreak |

Hi bluestreak, Hope you're still checking this query. The 1930 Census shows Roger Hornsby and family living at St Ferdinand Twp, St Louis, Missouri: HORNSBY Roger 33 (26) b. Texas Head Ball player, National Leagues HORNSBY Mary Jeanette 30 (23) b. Missouri Wife HORNSBY William 4y10m b. Missouri Son PENNINGTON Theresa 52 (21) b. Missouri Mother-in-law HENDERSON Esther 64 (19) b. Missouri Servant The figure in brackets is described as "age at first marriage", suggesting that both Roger and M-J had their first marriages c1923. Additional information suggests that Mary Jeanette's father was born in England. The age given for M-J is at odds with the information that you provided, suggesting that she was actually three years younger than her husband. However, I'm afraid I could not find any further data in the 1920 or 1910 Censuses to continue the story. Hope this is at least of some help to you. Regards and best wishes, Brett |

Dear Brett, As luciaphile responded on Jan. 17, Mary Jeanette told the 1930 census enumerator that she was 30, but she was known to be older than Rogers, and a liar. But I am indeed still hoping someone will look at my questions! I still do not have Mary Jeanette's date of birth. She has been real tough. I have seen this entry on the census. I have so many unanswered questions. Feel free to pick one out, and I promise to work sincerely with you, Brett. bluestreak |
