Trent Lott is, of course, a Republican from Mississippi who is the
Minority Leader of the U.S. Senate, and who has been expected to
return to the office of Majority Leader in January 2003:
U.S. Senate: Senator Trent Lott

Lott is a member of the Epsilon Xi Chapter of Sigma Nu at the
University of Mississippi, from which he graduated in 1965.

Sigma Nu has this to say about Sen. Lott at the page that is devoted
to him at the website of its national organization:

"His cool, calm and tactful approach kept peace and unity in the
chapter during the crisis when the first black student arrived on
campus. For his outstanding diplomacy and commitment to fraternal
values, both as commander of Epsilon Xi and president of the I[nter]
F[raternity]C[ouncil], Trent earned Sigma Nu’s national Achievement of
the Year award and became a charter member of the General Fraternity’s
newly established annual Alpha Alumni Affiliate program, the highest
honor bestowed on a Sigma Nu graduating senior."

Here, from Time Magazine's website, is a just-published article that
is devoted to Sen. Lott's college and fraternity experience:
