Dear pagae, The best place to start a search for someone who has changed their name due to marriage is the marriage license. Depending on where the marriage occurs, that falls under the Department of Health's Vital Records section, the county Clerk of Courts or the municipal Probate Court. Access to those records changes depending on location. For example, in New York, the Department of Health handles marriage records and only releases them with documented authorization. ( http://www.nyc.gov/html/doris/html/faq.html#marriage ) While in Ohio, the Probate Court deals with marriage licenses. The Probate Court in the capital has an online search database. ( http://www.co.franklin.oh.us/probate/PBMLSearch.html ) Or in King County (Seattle), Washington, there's the Recorder's Office. With the bride's maiden name and the date of the marriage, copies of the license cost $1. If you don't have the date, it costs $8 per each five years of records you want searched. ( http://www.metrokc.gov/lars/marriage/certify.htm ) It's best to find the county's website, so that you can see which of those categories your county falls into. If you tell me what county or city you're looking for, I'll look it up myself. Or you can check for yourself on www.searchsystems.net, which is a listing of mostly free public record websites. Search Strategy: "new york marriage licenses" "columbus ohio marriage licenses" "seattle marriage licenses" www.searchsystems.net I hope this helps. Feel free to ask for clarification if you have any more questions. | |

Apparently the researcher had no clue for my question. He suggested I read a book. I would think the researcher could refer me to someone who knows or seek the answer him/herself. I'm not eccouraged to ask any other questions |

Hi, pegae-ga, One type of search that has helped me to find married names of female friends is to look up high school or college alumni databases. You can usually find them under their "maiden" name by the year graduated. Of course, this is not always possible if you don't know where they went to school. I sympathize.....I've lost track of some of my female friends due to marriage, also, and I have tried and tried to look for them. Other than knowing something about the state they live in, or other background, you would have a hard time. There are a few, online "detective-type" databases you can join, for a fee, but you are often directed to search avenues which cost even more.... Not much help, I know! Sorry. umiat-ga |
