I have two steps for you. You may need to perform both of them in
order to get this working. The first step is to read through this
document at HPs website. It describes steps to take in Windows XP to
ensure that the HP scanning software is configured properly, and that
the buttons are setup properly. If this doesnt resolve your problem,
please follow the instructions in step 4 (uninstalling and
reinstalling the scanner software.)
http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/document.jhtml?lc=en&docName=bps05321&prodId=hpscanjet318408
Where it tells you to reinstall the newest version of the HP software,
you get the software from the following link:
http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/softwareList.jhtml?reg=&cc=&prodId=hpscanjet318408&lc=en&softitem=Microsoft%20Windows%20XP&sw_lang=en
The link has 3 options. You want either the first one, which allows
you to order a new CD from HP, or the third one, which allows you to
download the software. Its 54MB, so if youre not on a high-speed
connection, order a CD.
If you order a CD, when it arrives, pop it in and follow the on-screen
instructions. If you download the file, youll probably have saved it
on your desktop. If this is so, simply close internet explorer and
double click the new file to run it. If you saved it somewhere else,
youll have to open up My Computer and go to where you saved it,
then double click on it.
If these steps do not get your scanner working properly, please post a
clarification request detailing what steps you performed, in what
order, and what the results was.
Thank you

More thoughts; this is a Dell 4300 PC bought in Oct 2001. It is
supposed to be new. Does this have it's own program for scanner
control? I just reinstalled HP CD for scanner control . Are there
two competing programs trying to run one single scanner?

There shouldn't be any scanning software from Dell, other then Windows
XP's scan utility, which you mention seeing in your original question.
When you reinstalled the software, did you completely remove the old
installation first? Sometimes there can be conflicts between multiple
installations.
Did you go into the control panel and configure the buttons?
Click on start.
Click on control panel.
If you are in the newer XP style control panel, you'll need to click
on "Printers and other hardware"
Double click "scanners and cameras."
You should see an icon for you scanner. Right click it and choose
properties.
You should then have several tabs to choose from. One of them is
"events" click on the events tab.
On the events tab, there is a drop down box to select which button you
wish to configure. In your case, the one in question is "copy button
press".
Select that on the list, and then make sure that the next area says:
"start this program: HP Scanjet copy utility"
and the little radio button beside start this program should be
selected.
You may want to check the programs that are set for the other buttons.
when you are done, click apply, click OK, then restart the computer.
When it finishes booting, give it a try.
If this doesn't work, post another clarification request.

I just had another thought. You might need to run "HP scanjet copy
utility" off of the start menu and in the utility, configure where it
is copying to (as in which printer to print to)
Does your printer work? Can you print from other programs?

/The printer works. Still get message " HP Precison SCan LT cannot
find scanner" We have run HP's disc few times and now I show scanner
3 which may indicate that computer thinks there are three scanners.
Current thought is to go to add/Remove page and remove or
disinstall any scanner which shows up and then try to start over
again a run HP cd to reinstall the scanner.Does this
make any sense? (Too bad Sparky can't make house calls) When you talk
of button configuration, you mention little radio button. I have
small square for check mark or no check mark, can't identify " radio
button" and can't find " start this program" Not clear on "run HP
scanjet coy utility off of the start menu and in the utility. (?) what
utility? and how to configure it so copy. there is only one l printer
here.

Binky -
I'm glad it finally started working for you, although I wish I could
have gotten it working through the scanner's buttons the way HP says
it should. I agree that sometimes this forum can be difficult for
computer problems. I worked as a technician for a while and we would
have similar problems trying to troubleshoot by email or phone. ANd
yes, sometimes things just start working! I had a brand new computer
with Windows XP on it. I was doing an instore setup, installing
software and so one. After installing Norton antivirus, the computer
absolutely wouldn't admit that it had any way to connect to the
internet (which had been working). Then after an hour it worked again.
??
Thank you for your generous tip also.
