doug7870...

I'm confused about why you think Outlook Express, an
email program, would cause fatal errors in relation
to the use of your browser in signing into nytimes.com.
And, while we're at it, what browser are you using?

Hi doug7870-ga,
Lets see if we can help solve your problem. From your post, I
assume that you are running IE6 on Windows 98.
A lot of these "cannot find server" problems occur due to the
various web-accelerators or ad-blockers you may have installed on your
computer. So make sure that any
ad-blocker/web-accelerator/browser(IE6) that you are using is not
running, and try out the following suggestions. Before trying these
suggestions, delete all files and cookies in your Internet Explorer
cache.

   - The Internet Explorer Hosts file can be found in your Windows
folder. Its named 'hosts' with no file extension. This file contains a
list of mappings of IP addresses to host names. This file may be
hidden, so make sure that explorer is set to show hidden files(see
article linked below).
Find this file, and rename it "hosts.old". Restart your
computer and try browsing nytomes.com now.
        OR
Open the file in NOTEPAD, and delete all lines which contain
any references to nytimes.com. Save your changes, restart Windows and
try browsing.
For more information, check out the following article:
          - Hosts

   - Another place to check out, is IE6's connection setting. Start IE
and goto Tools>Internet Options and click on the 'Connections' tab.
Click the 'LAN Settings' button. In the dialog that appears, make sure
that the 'use proxy server' opton is unchecked. The only option
checked should be 'Automatically detect settings'. After making the
changes, click 'OK' and then 'Apply' to save your changes. Start IE
and try browsing now.

   - Make sure the following Internet Explorer options are set( Goto
Tools>Internet Options ) :
On the General tab, click on the Settings button. Make sure that
IE is set to check for newer versions of stored pages 'Automatically'.
On the Advanced tab, under Browsing, clear the check mark against
the option "the Enable third-party browser extensions (requires
restart)" option.
Under the Privacy tab, Make sure that the slider is set to
"Medium". Click the edit button. In the window that appears, make sure
that nytimes.com has not been blocked.
Apply the above options, and restart Windows.

 - If the above suggestions don't help, then try out the Microsoft
provided checklist to deal with these errors. You can find the article
at :
        - Troubleshooting Browsing Error Messages in Microsoft
Internet Explorer
          ( http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=/support/IE/ie5/topics/browse/iebrowseemts.asp
)

=============================
I expect one of the above suggestions to solve your problem. If the
problem still persists, please provide the following info :
    - What happened when you followed the above suggestions ?
    - What ad blocker program are you using ?
    - Which version of the McAffee Antivirus?
    - Which Operating System? Windows 98 or Windows 98 SE ?
    - Do you have IE6 service pack 1 installed?
    - Are you using any firewall software ?
    - What other programs are running in the background ?
    - Do you have this problem with other browsers also ? You can
download the following browsers to try out :
        Opera ( http://www.opera.com/download/ )
        Mozilla ( http://www.mozilla.org/ )
    - Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling IE to fix the
problem ?

================================
Hope this helps.
If you need any clarifications, just ask!

Regards,
Theta-ga
:-)

This was a good, thorough response. I thought I had found the "hosts"
file and deleted nytimes.com but I had not! I had deleted the
reference everywhere else. This solved my problem, and I am saving
your answer in case of other similar problems. Bravo, theta-ga!
