Hi gerryep and thank you for such and interesting question.

"Less than a two hour drive from Havana, the world-famous Varadero
beach stretches some 20 kilometers along a narrow peninsula on the
north coast of the island. Its popularity has resulted in an
ever-increasing number of hotels...
Wherever you stay here, access to what is certainly one of the top ten
beaches in the world is guaranteed. Varadero is the ideal place for a
holiday combining beach and nightlife."

***Beaches Varadero***
"The renowned Beaches Resorts now brings its innovative concept to one
of the finest beaches in the Caribbean, Varadero. This magnificent
adults only (16+ years) 4-star property brings to Cuba the well-known
ultra all-inclusive concept travelers have come to know and expect of
Beaches. Ideal for singles and couples. This resort has the finest of
amenities and conveniences, including an amazing pool and numerous
jacuzzis, great restaurants and bars, tennis courts, a watersports
center, a very well equipped fitness center with a sauna, a disco,
massage services, a salon, a wedding gazebo, and on and on Beaches is
a first-class resort in nearly every way."

***Breezes Varadero***
"At the 4-star SuperClubs Breezes Varadero, a lush tropical setting
continuously surrounds you. Built in 1992, Breezes Varadero is the
first super-inclusive resort in Cuba, designed for couples and adults
over 16 years old. Covering twenty-six acres of land, the resort
features three Jacuzzis, a large free-form pool, numerous restaurants
and bars, nightclubs, a piano bar, tennis courts, fitness facilities
and volleyball. On the beach, you can enjoy the clear blue sea,
indulge in virtually every water sport, taste delicious Cuban and
international dishes, and sip refreshing cocktails. The well-appointed
accommodations are air conditioned suites and junior suites, all
having satellite television and balcony or patio."

Here are reviews of the two resorts by someone who has actually been
to both:
"Beaches resort is slightly more upscale than the Superclubs. Mainly
the gym and buffet dining room were air conditioned (not AC at Breezes
Varadero). The pool was beautiful and I spent half the trip floating
around in it. The pool also had a pretty good sound system but they
played almost all latin music. Beaches crowd were mostly couples in
their 20's & 30's. Varadero beach is a white sand beach with no rocks
or coral out at least 200 feet (it is also very shallow)
Beaches food included more seafood and expensive ingredients than the
other resorts but I don' t think the cooks were quite as good. The
three restaurants did not come close to matching the high quality of
those at the Superclubs resorts esp the Italian at Breezes Varadero
and the Japanese at Breezes Costa Verde.
Rooms were nice, but furniture was slightly cheap in construction. The
best rooms were at Breezes Holguin with two large picture windows."
