Guy is doing a mean solo picking style on the guitar. Awesome song (to
me). I emailed Cingular a while back (before I knew about Google
Answers) and they told me the ad agency but I don't have that info
anymore Help! I would like to know the song-if it is not just an 'ad'
song.

I don't think I've seen this one, but I'd like to. According to this
page, the song is Beethoven's Ode to Joy:

http://www.wrightforyou.com/bgetc.html

"Everybody's curious about that Cingular Wireless commercial,
featuring a collection of a half-dozen excellent West Coast bluegrass
pickers, hammering away magnificently on Beethoven's "Ode To Joy". "

This page includes a brief bio of John Moore, one of the musicians
featured in these ads:

http://www.nativeandfine.com/HuckFinnMusicCamp/

According to his bio, the other performers featured in the ad were
"Dennis Caplinger, Bill Bryson, Herb Pedersen, Kenny Blackwell and
Sara Watkins."

Here's a page where you can download .wav or Real Audio formatted
versions of "Ode to Joy," if you want to confirm this is the song you
heard:

http://www.copleyplayers.com/listen.htm

I hope this answers your question. If this is the wrong commercial,
let me know and I'll see what else I can dig up for you.

lisarea-ga, thanks for the research effort. Actually, none of your
answers were the one I was thinking of, and then bobbie7 answered it
with his in a comment. I would like to split the fee between you two
for the effort--is that possible? I can't seem to figure that out
here. Thanks.

Hi, Jugger.

To answer your question, no, there is no way to split a fee among
multiple researchers.

I was watching your question fairly closely in the event that it
required a followup--not having seen the ad, I knew there was a chance
I had the wrong song--so I've already contacted the editors about it.

Thanks,
Lisa.

Hello again Jugger,

I found two sources that state that the song played on the guitar on
the Cingular ad is an old Buddy Guy song called "Mary Had A Little
Lamb. I am also including an mp3 of the song so that you can check it
out. If you feel that I have answered your question, just let me know
in order to post the official answer.

Best regards,
--Bobbie7

“The Cingular commercial guitarist isn't familiar to me, but he's
playing an old Buddy Guy song called "Mary Had A Little Lamb." Stevie
Ray Vaughn did a more popular cover of this song on his Texas Flood
album, and the guy in the Cingular commercial is clearly trying to
imitate the Stevie Ray version.”

2You may have seen a commercial for Cingular Wireless with a guy
wailing on an acoustic guitar. This is a version of the intro to a
song called "Mary Had a Little Lamb" originally recorded by George
"Buddy" Guy in 1968, and also recorded by Stevie Ray Vaughan. I'm not
familiar enough with versions of this song to tell if it is a complete
rip-off or just a partial one, but it definitely sounds pretty groovy
to me, although it's by no means perfect in a musical sense. I managed
to record a show that had the commericial in it, and I captured it.
