I am trying to assist someone at a remote office with learning new
software. The way I usually do this is with a program called VNC
(www.realvnc.com), but we use it using the “listening viewer” method.

The nice thing about listening viewer is that it lets the remote user
initiate the connection, and can get around the fact that the remote
user is behind a NAT router.

The problem is that this remote user is running a Mac, and the Mac
version of VNC doesn’t have the “add new client” option that is needed
in the “listening viewer” method of using VNC. I even tried a Mac
program called VNC Thing (another VNC client), but that didn’t seem to
have it ether.

The challenge here is that the user on the remote end is behind a NAT
router that does not have a DMZ or port forwarding. That’s why we
can’t use something like Netopia’s Timbuktu software (which works on
both PC and Mac and would solve our problem).

I have both a Mac and PC at my location so even a Mac to Mac only
solution would work, if it got around the NAT issue.

I believe that the Remote Assistance feature of windows XP will do the
same thing as we are doing with VNC, but is also a windows only
solution.

Hello Sherpaj,

Please clarify the version of Mac OS in use at your remote site. Is it
OS 9 or OS X (and which version). The Unix utility called "vncconnect"
appears to do what you want (thought I might only support X
applications) but that would be for OS X only.

OS9 primarily. if there is absolutely no solution, I can upgrade to osx.
