There was a film I saw which I think was about the mother of all
traffic jams.

It showed several incidents which occurred on the same day to stop
traffic.

One incident was a foursome playing golf. It was a close game, and
every time this guy was playing a shot, the opponents would do
something, like cough or let the golf bag fall to the ground.

Finally the guy just loses it and starts hitting golf balls off the
course onto the road. Cars are getting pelted with golf balls, and
that’s how part of the traffic jam got started.

What is the name of this film?

Hello Markabe.

I believe that your movie is "The Great American Traffic Jam" (1980).
Also known as "Gridlock," the film is indeed about "the mother of all
traffic jams."

See the following description that identifies Wink Martindale as the
golfer who loses it and starts hitting balls onto the freeway:

"My nomination for 'Worst Wink Martindale Movie' had to be 'The Great
American Traffic Jam' ... Wink was the cause of the start of
'LA's Worst Traffic Jam' -- He was playing golf near a freeway trying
to
concentrate, and lost it when people kept blowing their horns. Then
Wink started hitting golf balls towards the freeway"

See listings for the video on Amazon.com:

Or half.com:

search strategy: google groups: "traffic jam", golf, movie

I hope this helps.

juggler,
I cannot find the film under the two titles you gave me anywhere. is
it possible that it has a different title in Australia?

Hello Markabe.

Unfortunately, the only two titles that I've found for the movie are
"Gridlock" and "The Great American Traffic Jam."
See the entry at the Internet Movie Database:
http://us.imdb.com/Title?0080817
Perhaps the movie was never released on video in Australia. This was
originally a made-for-television film, so it might have just aired on
Australian TV but never made it to video there. Would it be possible
for you to buy an NTSC (US) format tape and have it converted?
Both Amazon.com and half.com are showing inventory of the US format
tape:

Could it be "Rubbernecking"? This movie is about a huge traffic jam.
I'm not sure about golf balls, though.

A synopsis is here:
