There are two cameras which can take the top 2 positions, namely the
Canon G2 and the Sony S85, however they are slightly on the large side
to be classified as 'compact'. They are worthy of a mention due to
their outstanding image quality and should be included if they fall
into your definition of compact.

The Canon G2 is probably the best under $500. The G2 has become one of
the benchmarks in the prosumer camera segment.
