Dear idalion1-ga;
Thank you for allowing me an opportunity to answer your interesting
question.
The Jewish hero you are referring to was Yanosh Kortchack Henric
Goldshmidt (1879 - 1942), also known as Yanosh Korchak. He was
highly regarded educator of children in Poland at the turn of the 20th
century and eventually wrote several books, among them, "King Matya
the 1st" (1928) and "Yotam the wizard" (1934).
Kortchack founded an educational method that puts the love for the
child at the center of all things in Jewish education and in 1911 was
appointed manager of the Jewish orphanage in Warsaw. His introduced
the idea of letting the pupils "self-run" the school and was well
loved by the children. Kortchack was also a member of the Sochnut
(The Jewish Agency) and was a top Zionist representative.
When World War II began, Kortchacks orphanage was moved to Warsaw and
all the children in the orphanage were deported to the extermination
camps in Treblinka. The Nazis offered to spare Kortchacks life if he
would only agree to part with the children, but in the fashion of true
holocaust heroes, Kortchack showed immeasurable courage and chose
instead to accompany the orphans to the death camp in an effort to
provide them with care and hope against certain death. He, along with
his children, perished at Treblinka in 1942.
