Is anyone able to help me as to why my home PC (socket 478, with a 1.7
GHz Celeron) should be freezing on startup at the end of the white
horizontal bar graph with the message "Starting windows" on loading
with Windows 2000 Professional?
I have just installed a new upgrade motherboard (ECS) after
accidentally scratching the last one installing the CPU heatsink
spring clip. |

1. Is this new motherboard the exact same make/model as the one that
you had in there previously?
2. Have you tried loading Windows 2000 in Safe Mode?

thnanks for the feedback.
This is a new motherboard; a socket 478 model from ECS. THe old
motherboard (here's a tip; never install an new CPU late at night
after getting home from a few drinks!) was a socket 370 Tyan Tiger
dual processor 230T. A very nice board, but scratched, so I took the
opportunity to upgrade to a PIV type board.
I haven't tried loading in safe mode yet; press F8 on loading?
Cheers,
~kokopu.

Deadlychiapet is right, Windows 2000 is responding negatively to you
changing out the motherboard type (and most likely the chipset used).
Most likely, it's freezing while trying to load a device driver that
was used for the previous motherboard or chipset. Unless you can get
into Safe Mode (F8) and are familiar with removing all of the
components (drivers) from the previous motherboard, your best bet is
probably going to be to reinstall Windows 2000. You can try
reinstalling it over the previous installation, but if that doesn't
work, you'll need to format and reinstall.
