Hello,

QUESTION

Is it posible to use "time travel technology" to help a person in
distress go back in time and be again the healthy person he/she used
to be?

ANSWER

The best way to start this answer is by considering the comment
offered by my colleage flajason-ga: "Sorry to be the bearer of bad
news, but it is unlikely that you will be able to get your hands on a
time machine as such a device doesn't exist."

And the he added: "Instead of focusing your energies on a solution
that is very unlikely, perhaps your friend should seek medical
attention to address his current medical problems." I certainly agree
with this assessment but, together with the bad news, will offer some
good news for your consideration.

Modern analytical psychology (after Sigmund Freud [1] and Carl Jung
[2]) provides a "time machine" that allows a person, not to physically
go back in time, but to go back to the subconscious roots of h**
distress, face whatever dark realities must be faced, and in so doing
become liberated from them and the associated psychosomatic symptoms,
at least to some extent.

The "time machine" started by Freud is the "psycho-analysis",
subsequently developed further by Jung as "analysis of the
unconscious". This "time machine" is not a physical device. It is a
method for reaching the root causes(s) of distress that lurk in the
subsconscious of the sick person, not to change them, but to remove
them as obstacles in the path toward healthy personal development.
This is Jung's definition:

"[Analysis] is only a means for removing the stones from the path of
development, and not a method . . . of putting things into the patient
that were not there before. It is better to renounce any attempt to
give direction, and simply try to throw into relief everything that
the analysis brings to light, so that the patient can see it clearly
and be able to draw suitable conclusions. Anything he has not acquired
himself he will not believe in the long run, and what he takes over
from authority merely keeps him infantile. He should rather be put in
a position to take his own life in hand. The art of analysis lies in
following the patient on all his erring ways and so gathering his
strayed sheep together. C.G. Jung, "Some Crucial Points in
Psychoanalysis," [2] section 4, par. 643.

There is a widespread prejudice that analysis is something like a
"cure," to which one submits for a time and is then discharged healed.
That is a layman's error left over from the early days of
psychoanalysis. Analytical treatment could be described as a
readjustment of psychological attitude achieved with the help of the
doctor. . . . [But] there is no change that is unconditionally valid
over a long period of time. C. G. Jung, "The Transcendent Function,"
[2] section 8, par. 142.]

A complete exposition of analytical psychology if of course beyond the
limits of this space -- indeed, beyond the intelectual capacity of
this GA researcher. An excellent summary is provided by Frieda
Fordham [3].

Based on *my own* experience, and the experience of so many people who
have been liberated (at least to some extent) of unpleasant
spychosomatic symptoms, please take your friend to a good psychiatrist
-- if possible, to a good psycho-analyst. Contact information in any
part of the world is provided in [4] and [5] -- click on "Analyst
Directory".

Note: Psychoanalysis is no panacea. It takes time, determination, and
courage to face the devils within. But, as the saying goes, "no pain,
no gain".

RESEARCH SUMMARY

There is no such thing as a physical "time machine", except perhaps in
the allegorical or metaphorical sense [6, 7]. But modern analytical
psychology provides a "time machine" that enables a person, when fully
committed to a "therapeutic alliance" with the analyst, to go back in
time (even to early childhood) in order to identify the root cause(s)
of mental and psychosomatic distress. Psychoanalysis is not a miracle
cure. It is, however, a monumental breakthrough in the history of
human development. And it is much better than any "time machine
device", because it not only brings the sick person back in time, but
also removes the subconscious forces that impede h** to live a full
and fruitful life, here and now.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it is unlikely that you will
be able to get your hands on a time machine as such a device doesn't
exist.

Instead of focusing your energies on a solution that is very unlikely,
perhaps your friend should seek medical attention to address his
current medical problems.
