In regard to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America: Do any Clubs own their own aircraft and give flying lessons to their members? Do any Clubs give flying lessons to members with rental aircraft? I am interested if they are getting flying lessons, and not just getting sight seeing rides.

I am currently enrolled at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University for a Master's Degree and spoke with an instructor here. He states that the Boys and Girls Club does not own aircraft. Here is a list of programs that the Club does offer: http://www.bgca.org/programs/default.asp However, there is a program run by the Rotary Clubs of America called Young Eagles (which involves students in Middle School) that gives them early flight experience. My instructor friend and I are currently involved in this program. It basically selects motivated 6-8th graders from local Middle Schools here in Daytona Beach and gives those students a pretty thorough ground school experience, plus actual flight experience with a certified instructor. This program is run nationwide. Details about the Young Eagles program can be found. http://www.youngeagles.com/ Also, he recommended the following FBOs (Fixed Base of Operations) where you can receive instruction in CA. http://www.airnav.com/airports/us/CA Please let me know if you need any clarifications, or any additional information about the Young Eagles Program.

The researcher did not answer the specific question. The question, very clearly requested the answer to be comprehensive in regard to The Boys & Girls Club. The researcher made a first-rate comment, but not a good answer. |

Dear Clicker, I work part time with the B&Gs Club here in Arizona. I have e-mailed the folks at the national level to ask about flight clubs. When I get a response I will post it here. Regards, Gitana |

Dear Clicker, This is the first response I received from B&GC of America. I will post all follow up responses here: "We're not immediately aware of any flying programs, but we're checking around our programs department. Many people are out for the holidays, so it may take a little while to learn more. Best wishes, Chelsea Rathburn" Happy Holidays, gitana |

Dear Clicker, Good news!! Below please find the e-mail I received from BGC of America. I hope this works out for you. Working for the Boys and Girls Club has been a great experience. "I did some checking in Program Services and learned that the BGC of Portland Metro, Blazer unit (OR) offers flying lessons. Members actually fly (with an instructor) after completing the multi week course. Kids are qualified to pass the pilot's exam when they are old enough to take it. Below is the Club contact information. Blazers Boys & Girls Club CPO Marziello, Joseph & Lisabeth 5250 NE Martin Luther King Blvd. Portland OR, 97211 Email: jmarziello@bgclubportland.org Telephone: (503) 232-0077 Fax: (503) 232-0387 " Seasons Greetings, gitana |

I also contacted the main office of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America to get more information. I have learned that the BGC of Portland Metro, Blazer unit offers flying lessons. They run a summer camp that includes both classroom and flying experience. The Civil Air Patrol's Cadet Program offers pilot training to youth attending the sixth grade or 12 years old up to 21 years of age. This program is very military in nature. http://www.capnhq.gov/nhq/cp/Questions.html The Aviation Scholarship Foundation is a charity dedicated to students from Illinois and Indiana's poorest communities. Their mission is to fund private pilot training for low income youth. http://members.aol.com/kidsfly/mission.html The Blue Yonder Foundation works with high schools to offer flight training to young people. http://www.blueyonder.org/ The "Young Aviators" Program provides scholarships to underprivileged boys and girls between the ages of 14 and 16 to train to become private pilots. These scholarships are offered in the form of ground and flight school instructional programs taught at Craig Airport in Jacksonville, Florida. http://www.smpf.org/goals.html Merry Christmas! bcguide-ga |

I sure want to thank everyone who answered the question, and made a comment. We are so fortunate to live in the United States, where private flying is so common. Keep the comments coming, this dialog is most interesting. Thanks again, clicker5 |

Clicker5: Here is what they told me: You have responded to the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Ana, California. We have no flight instruction activities as such. However, you can check the national website at www.bgca.org or call the office in Atlanta at 404-815-5700 and ask for the marketing dept. Good luck. ----- Original Message ----- To: cgclub@earthlink.net Sent: Thursday, January 02, 2003 1:30 PM Subject: Boys and Girls Club Programs -- Flight Instruction? Cindy: I am writing to you in regards to a conversation I had with an associate concerning the Boys and Girls Club activities. He claims that the Club owns several small airplanes for use in familiarizing youngsters and encouraging them to fly. I checked your program page and saw no such evidence. Could you set me straight on this matter? I'd appreciate your time. Thanks! Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Student |
