Question ID: 127361
I'm looking for a list of banks in the United States. The specific
information I'd like on the list is: Name of Bank, Address, Phone,
Asset Size (or total deposits). Ideally, the list would also contain
the name of the CEO, the website address, the asset size by county (or
total deposits by county), and a short sentence describing the bank's
preferred type of customer (e.g. consumers, businesses, etc.) and
(ideally) the information would be in electronic form. Part 1 of this
request (the first sentence) I would expect to be available for free
via the Federal Reserve somehow, and my question relates to where I
can find the info. Part 2 of this request, I'm willing to pay for if
the info is good, and my question relates to who are the best sources
for purchasing this information.

Are you looking for headquarters locations of banks or all branches and offices?

Dear skriplani,

Thanks for your question. First, let me request that if any of the
following is unclear or if you require any further research – please
don’t hesitate to ask me for a clarification.

You requested information regarding US banks. Specifically, you
requested a source for a list of all US banks including contact
information and asset size, as well as Web site addresses, asset size
by county and the bank’s preferred customer type.

While all of this information is available – it is not available in
one place. You’ll have to extract several directories and then
cross-reference them – if you have some basic Excel skills, you should
be able to (eventually…) get all of this data into one spreadsheet.
In what follows I will provide you with sources for the information
you requested. Most of it is free, and the remainder is a lot less
expensive than I was afraid it would be… (Order of magnitude of
several hundred of dollars rather than thousands…)

EXTENSIVE BANK AND FINANCIAL INSTITUTION INFORMATION
****************************************************

The FDIC will allow you to run several reports to extract this
information, based on a variety of cross-sections – but on a
state-by-state basis; nevertheless, this will provide you with the
most comprehensive list. The number of variables you can extract here
is quite impressive and includes employees, asset, deposits,
liabilities, balances, etc. etc. (there are 45 different variables
available!) -

http://www3.fdic.gov/sdi/main.asp

However, FDIC will not provide you with addresses etc. – you’ll have
to extract those from a different source and cross-reference.

The core FDIC database that provides statistics on depository
institutions can be queried in a variety of additional methods –
direct access to the database is from here –

http://www3.fdic.gov/sdi/

The FDIC provides several additional directories that may be of
interest to you -

Large Commercial Banks

http://www.federalreserve.gov/releases/lbr/

Minority-Owned Banks

http://www.federalreserve.gov/releases/mob/

Structure and Share Data for U.S. Offices of
Foreign Banks

http://www.federalreserve.gov/releases/iba/

The FDIC also compiles and provides CRA Performance Ratings for all
regulated banks in the nation; a searchable database can be accessed
city by city -

http://www.federalreserve.gov/dcca/cra/crarate.cfm

The last source of FDIC information I believe may be of value to you
is the following – the FDIC provides a comprehensive list of all FDIC
insured offices that is downloadable and available from here –

http://www3.fdic.gov/idasp/main.asp

OTHER SOURCES OF DATA ON US BANKS
**********************************

The National Information Center of the Federal Reserve System allows a
variety of searches and provides detailed information retrieval on all
regulated institutions, but it must be retrieved institution by
institution –

http://www.ffiec.gov/nic/default.htm

Savings & Loans
--------------------

The Office of Thrift Supervision (OTS) supervises Savings & Loan
institutions and provides directories and analysis of all Savings &
Loans institutions in the country – click on the summary numbers in
the rightmost column to extract regional lists, or on the summary
number in the bottom right corner to extract the entire list.

http://www.ots.treas.gov/instsql/default.cfm?catNumber=70

The OTS list also happens to provide complete contact information.

Credit Unions
-----------------

The National Credit Union Administration oversees all credit unions in
the US. A downloadable directory of all the credit unions in the US
is available here –

http://www.ncua.gov/data/directory/cudir.html

The Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council provides
additional reports and analytics (for free) here –

http://www.ffiec.gov/info_services.htm

ASSET SIZE BY COUNTY
********************

A major part of your query related to extracting bank asset size by
county. There are several data sources that can provide you with such
detailed data for a fee. The FDIC recommends several such private
information sources. Contact information and pricing is available
here –

http://www.fdic.gov/bank/individual/bank/index.html

One of the providers you will see as you peruse this list is Veribanc.
I called Veribanc this morning, and they will be available to provide
you with an electronic database that breaks down bank assets by state
and by county – they could also provide you with addresses, phone
numbers, and the name of either the CEO or the bank President, as well
as core basic information about the bank (e.g. main desired customer
type etc.). I spoke to Cheryl, but she suggested that to receive a
quote you speak with Mike Heller (that is, if you wish to contact this
company, of course!). He is available at 800.442.2657. Cheryl
indicated that the minimum custom report cost is $100, but the final
cost will depend on the number of fields you will require etc.
Encouragingly, it did not seem like this would be something that would
cost you thousands of dollars.

WEB SITE ADDRESSES
*******************

Your best bet for the most up-to-date Web site addresses is the Google
Directory – you can find a directory of US banks at -
http://directory.google.com/Top/Business/Financial_Services/Banking_Services/Banks_and_Institutions/Regional/North_America/United_States/

Yahoo also provides a similar listing at –

http://dir.yahoo.com/Business_and_Economy/Shopping_and_Services/Financial_Services/Banking/Banks/By_Region/U_S__States/

Yahoo’s listing is strictly by state, and they list about three times
as many banks as Google does.

Veribanc (above) as well as ReferenceUSA (below) should also be able
to provide you with Web addresses.

CONTACT INFORMATION FOR BANKS AND SENIOR STAFF
************************************************

Finally, a source I often use to extract contact information is
ReferenceUSA. Their business database is extremely comprehensive, and
rarely will they not list a business I am trying to track down. The
database also includes names of all senior executives, including CEO
and VPs etc. It does not look like you can purchase a report from
them, however, they are available through most major library systems –
you’ll need to check with your local library, or, if you’d rather, let
me know in what zip code you are located and I’ll find a place where
you can sit down and extract data from this source. ReferenceUSA is
at -

www.referenceUSA.com

To contact ReferenceUSA, use the following form (or write them –
address listed on following page; unfortunately, no phone number or
email address)

http://www.referenceusa.com/cu/cu.asp?si=87140268498656

You may also want to check your local office supplies store; there are
several inexpensive software packages available ($20 to $50) that
provide contact information for millions of businesses on CD-ROM.
However, these are typically not as up-to-date as ReferenceUSA’s live
database.

I hope this response adequately addresses your request. Please let me
know if you are in need of additional information concerning this
query, I will be glad to carry out any additional research you are in
need of in reference to this request.

Thanks,
ragingacademic
