Hello,

I would be interested in all of the metrics that you mentioned (US,
Global, number of units and dollar amount). Whatever you can find
will be a big help.

Thanks,

tony

Dear berkt,

Thanks for your question. First, let me request that if any of the
following is unclear or if you require any further research – please
don’t hesitate to ask me for a clarification.

You requested data regarding monthly computer sales in units and
dollars, in the US as well as globally.

The NPD Group makes such data available on a subscription basis. They
have several subscription packages available and you can peruse their
offerings at –

http://www.npdtechworld.com/techServlet?nextpage=ps_industry.html

Sometimes, they will make monthly data available through press
releases – but it seems that they almost never release
category-specific information in a consistent manner month after
month. This data can be found here –

http://www.npdtechworld.com/techServlet?nextpage=trend_index.html

IDC also provides such data to subscribers. IDC is at –

http://www.idc.com/en_US/search/viewSearchRes.jhtml?_requestid=1022

A search for “PC Sales” on the IDC site will provide you with the
following results –

http://www.idc.com/en_US/search/viewSearchRes.jhtml?_requestid=1022

Most of the hits on this page are for subscribers only, but some will
provide some little amount of data as a “teaser” – and this will give
you a taste for the extent of data IDC can provide.

Gartner also provides in-depth PC Sales data –

www.gartner.com

A sample report is available here –

http://www4.gartner.com/DisplayDocument?doc_cd=112257

But includes only annual data (albeit forecast several years out).

Sometimes, IDC and other research firms release partial data to news
agencies. As an example, here is some data released by Pacific Crest
Securities a few years back for US retail desktop sales –

Units Amount ($) ASP Units Amount ASP

            Jan-97 155,293 $245,271,954 $1,579 -5% -19% -15%
            Feb-97 159,656 $237,475,279 $1,487 5% -11% -15%
            Mar-97 168,977 $246,535,947 $1,459 8% -11% -18%
            Apr-97 162,720 $232,188,452 $1,427 16% -8% -21%
            May-97 138,184 $203,384,726 $1,472 20% 3% -15%
            Jun-97 165,968 $228,283,630 $1,375 18% -2% -17%
            Jul-97 169,899 $246,047,021 $1,448 41% 23% -13%
            Aug-97 205,410 $279,163,323 $1,359 31% 7% -18%
            Sep-97 216,982 $293,947,698 $1,355 27% 6% -17%
            Oct-97 186,778 $250,984,027 $1,344 11% -12% -20%
            Nov-97 241,951 $321,125,651 $1,327 7% -11% -16%
            Dec-97 315,672 $398,984,327 $1,264 14% -8% -19%

Pacific Crest’s site is currently undergoing a redesign, but it is at

Annual PC sales growth is available via eTForecasts press releases on
a sporadic basis; also, they don’t provide coverage for every single
year, but they do provide some valuable regional breakdown –

http://www.etforecasts.com/pr/pr0502.htm

PCWorld often reports on PC sales, but typically its results come from
IDC, and it rarely reports on a monthly basis. Nevertheless, it’s
worth a shot –

www.pcworld.com

Search for “PC sales.” Among dozens of articles, I found the
following more recent report –

Nikkei Market Access releases monthly PC sales trends for Japan – they
are available for free, but are in Japanese –
