Hi B,
I just finished sending in my report for a May 15 brief siting -
hopefully there's room on the map for us. Today I watched our little
guy enjoying the Primroses. Ahhhh, all's right with the world...
...and you?

Good afternoon hummer!
Great to hear from you...
Sunday the 18th while doing yardwork I spotted our first summer
visitor. One day earlier than last year! Filed my report immediately.
Someone filed four days earlier. Incredibly in a week of overcast
cloud, winds and near freezing temperatures a hummer was spotted on
our island (nunknown spotter). Summer hit with nice sun and warm
temperatures starting late on the 16th. Nice to have our friends back.
There appear to be five registered sightings on the Canada map for the
15th. Did yours make it?

Hi B -
Yes, we are on the map for May 15 - last year it was May 16. Does that
help? 8-)
We seem to have settled down to two males and one female. I think both
males are young or, they are alittle weird. Usually, a male will sit
high on a favorite branch to survey his kingdom and dive bomb anybody
who dares to enter his realm. These little guys spend their time low,
on branches where there is lots of cover - hardly suitable for
surveying the territory. I'll have to see how the summer progresses -
probably one of them will get the hang of it before long.
Yes, *very* nice to have our friends back.

Good evening B -
I hope you are having a warmer/dryer spring than we are. We have
enjoyed the antics of three females at the feeder today, plus the two
males - I hope they all stay. If we can keep the three females, we
will have a great show when they all bring their little families
around before heading south.
A rare unilingual bird,

Good Evening Hummer
Nice to hear from you.. You've attracted quite a flock!
W've had mixed weather here.. but not cool like central Canada. May
was not too wet and the farmers have been very busy. Everywhere you
look the fields are bright red and freshly tilled wonderfully
contrasting the lush green. Amazingly we have had no recent frosts and
everyone is eager to get their annuals in. Unfortunately we often get
a chilly surprise up to mid June. Soon with those flowers in the
window boxes we'll see the busy hummers up close. Today the
hummingbirds were busy in the blossoming saskatoon and chokecherry
bushes. Have yet to experience the spectacle of the 'U' shape diving
routine. I think that some birds are still recent arrivals as one
showed up yesterday evening at a freshly replenished feeder and spent
a very long time fueling up.There are 8 feeders in all so I don't
think the little fellow was simply waiting for a fresh supply. Still
unable to determine how many are here.
My 'hummer' project this year is to photograph each one. It will be
nice to know how many frequent our particular area over a summer. I
must check to see if they establish territory.
I hope your visitors bring forth many young

B! That was fantastic - thank you! Can you imagine feeding all those
hummers with just three feeders??? Why don't they buy more feeders?
And I thought I was having trouble keeping up with ours with seven
feeders - that's probably one feeder per bird! Ofcourse she ended up
being in BC - where else would it be? I'm in the middle of a Scrabble
game with my 86 year old aunt. We haven't seen each other in over 30
years, so we play every week and enjoy it. Ofcourse, she's as sharp as
a tack and usually wins. Thanks! H.

Hi B,
Yes, the hummers have been fine. The babies seem to be out of the
nests as activity is a bit frantic all of a sudden but I haven't a
clue how to tell a baby from an adult. I do wish I could get a count
of them all, but it is impossible. Thanks to you, I noticed a pregnant
female for the first time - her tummy bulge was quite obvious but I
had never really thought about it before I heard that interview.
You know, the GA editors have been quite patient with us but we really
aren't supposed to be using the clarification section for chatting -
they would prefer we use the comment section. Don't worry, I will
notice it if you post a comment because your question will pop up to
the top of my list.
You always post interesting questions (for example the folksong
question) - wish I could be of more help!
Take care,
H

Still waiting to hear back from the CBC. Given the amount of interest
"the voice" has generated, I suspect they'll keep it a secret as long
as possible. Ray?

I just got it, the omitted question mark - took me long enough, eh? I
knew you had to be trying to tell me something, and I was pretty sure
what, but how to get from here to there was puzzling. You're too much
- you must have a newfie humour gene or two in you.
I'd love to crack the case but we are hitting the road soon - I'll
check back when we return and see how you are making out. See you
later, hummmer
