Looking for the name of the shooter who shot and killed (with a
shotgun) a man on a local mountain. He received 8 years in jail. he
was apparently a recluse who was living in the bush on the mountain
for some time. time was likely over 5 - 10 years ago or earlier.

I am working on your question. In the meantime, please provide any
additional information such as details you might remember, exactly or
roughly where it may have taken place, the name of the mountain if
possible, where you recall hearing about this, what time of year it
might have been, was it a big news item of the time, what
newspapers/tv stations may have carried the story? etc.

Thanks

Mountain would likely have been Cypress, Hollyburn or perhaps Grouse.
Should have been a "News item"as aparently individual who was shot(
apparently with a shotgun) was still alive while the shooter walked
away but the victim later dies.

I have searched through all the newspapers around the time frame
you've given: I can't find a good lead on the shooting. Can you
remember *ANY* other details? Motive? (i.e. was it a killing for a
particular reason?) or anything else?

Thanks,

Legolas-ga

quick --

Per your comment of last night, here is a link to the news story
relating to the 1987 crime that I described in my earlier comment:
North Shore News/December 7, 1998
http://www.nsnews.com/issues98/w120798/12049801.html

The convicted perpetrator's name is Joseph Hammond. Please let me know
whether this turns out to be the lead you are looking for. If it is,
I will repost it as an answer.

Good luck.

Dear quick-ga

The article cited refers to the NORTH VANCOUVER PROVINCIAL COURT and a
suspect who was by no means a "recluse". Are you certain that your
incident took place in WEST VANCOUVER AREA? Also, I am expecting
information back from someone in Canada who is working on this story
for me.

Not sure it was West Van / could have been North Van. The Hammond
reference posted by Markj/ga is not the incident. Appreciate all your
help.

could you tell us which of the facts from the story you're absolutely
sure of?
Is it definitely on north shore mountain? Or are you sure of the 8
year sentence?

There seems to be some ambiguity in most/all of the facts; could you
tell us how you (or the police) check if the story is the correct or
not? ie how do you know the Hammond story is not the correct
one..what's the rationale behind this? I'm assuming there's got to be
some fact somebody is sure of to declare one story the incorrect
answer..

Thank you,
Tox-ga

Hello Quick-ga,

Yesterday I sent an e-mail to a friend of mine who lives in Vancouver
inquiring about this news story. Hopefully she can recall the event
and tell us the name of the shooter.

Best regards,

The closest I have been able to come (and it's not very close) is an
assault in 1987 on Grouse Mountain in which the perpetrator strangled
(not shot) the victim (a woman) and left her for dead (but she
survived). The assailant got an eight-year sentence.

To "markj-ga" ---maybe this is our guy? It may be the story of the
crime got exagerated over the years. If you can provide a name i will
try and confirm with local police.
