made frequent reference to a doctor in a neighbouring practice who was
seldom, if ever, seen. What was his name?

Dear Goldenbowls,

The obvious doctor in a neighbouring practice was Dr Snoddie.  But I'm
not sure he fits your description of being rarely seen.  In fact,
