Question ID: 13347
i need a software to split a huge (500,000 pages) PDF file by
bookmarks. every bookmark should be at the end in one sperate file.
evry file must contain "reference" to external images and fonts,
because most of the pages has same graphics and it can save lots of
place. a PDF file after being splitted must not contain images, unless
it is the only file (from the original huge one) that needs to contain
the specipic image.
thanks

If no software is available for this very specific request (I haven't
been able to run across anything as yet), would finding a number to a
consulting company who does this sort of thing be helpful instead?

hi. it will not be a link. if you know PDF references, an Xobject may
load image from an external file, so when you open the PDF file in a
viewer, you won't see any diferences. the image now can be in the same
directory as the other pdf files in.
thanks

Hi there!

Thanks for your request! here are the results of our search:

BOOKMARK UTILITY
I don't know if you require a utility to create bookmarks, this is
program provides the ability to generate bookmarks on the basis of
chapter or section headings. It also has a LOT of other PDF
manipulation features:

Bookmarks by Example
Table of Contents Builder
Batch Meister
Page Linker
Chain Linker
Copy Linker
Document Auditor
Document Composer
Document Paginator
Masking Tool
Overlay Tool
Bookmark and Link Manager
File Open Option Manager
Security Manager
Aerial Tools
Fill Document Information
Create Thumbnails for a batch of files with one click.
Document linker
Load Settings
Save Settings
Configure Tool Palette

PDF SPLITTING UTILITIES

While this program does not have a graphical user interface (ie. runs
on a command prompt) I have used it for quite some time now and can
confirm that it is an excellent product for the function that you are
attempting to achieve! It also converts any same-file links to links
that reference the new corresponding file.
&lt;a href=&quot;<a href="http://pdf.glance.ch/eval/CLT/Win/pdsplit.zip">http://pdf.glance.ch/eval/CLT/Win/pdsplit.zip</a>&quot;&gt;<a href="http://pdf.glance.ch/eval/CLT/Win/pdsplit.zip">http://pdf.glance.ch/eval/CLT/Win/pdsplit.zip</a>&lt;/a&gt;

Note that the above is a shareware program, so you will have some time
to test out the program before deciding whether or not to purchase it.
The documentation in the .zip file contains further information.

There is another similar program that does have a graphical user
interface. It is, however, in its first release so any bugs have not
been documented. This is also a shareware version and has the
following restrictions:
Nag Screens
Limited to 3 items in list
Split max 20 pages

Hi,

Actually the process of splitting is required to maintain the links
(ie. it is part of the same process). If you re-read the first utility
writeup you will see that it does provide that functionality. I may
have been wrong to title the section just &amp;quot;PDF SPLITTING UTILITIES&amp;quot;
since all of the ones listed there do quite a bit more.

Hi,

OK this makes things clearer than your original question, but I need
one additional piece of information to fulfill your request. You said
you want to take graphics from a pdf file and replace them with a link
that leads to the file, but where will these images actually be
located and how will they be opened once the link is clicked (ie. will
it open in a web browser or another pdf etc)?

Reason this answer was rejected by shachar-ga:
the answer did not help me at all. it just gave links to pdf cmpanies.

you just send links to companies that deal with splitting pdf. my
problem is not the splitting, it's the keeping the resources shared
with external refernces. thanks

There is two excellent apps that will split PDF files.

Infodata's Compose http://www.infodata.com/compose.asp should be able
do this. It's expensive but it;s industrial strength. They have a 30
day demo to try out.

Another is ARTS Split & Merge Wizard.
http://www.epublishstore.com/details.asp?ProdID=7 This also is a good
product to try. They have a demo version you can try out.

I have used both (no plug here) but they work.

Good luck

Compose combined with Binary Things Split & Merge wizard
http://www.epublishstore.com/details.asp?ProdID=7 seems to be a best
bet for getting the job done as Compose has very sophisticated
bookmark and link cabilities.(I know, I use the product - No plug
intended.) When these tools are used together in conjunction with your
access to source files, or references to same, should allow you to get
the job done. Check out the demos. The compose one is fully funtional
for 30 days. The other demo is limited to just 5 files. Other
companies you might try out include Appligent
http://www.appligent.com/newpages/products.html and resources like
PlanetPDF http://www.planetpdf.com and http://www.pdfzone.com/

Good luck.

For bookmarking your file you can try

http://www.infodata.com/compose.asp
which will create bookmarks from your specifications. I'm not quite
sure what you meant about references to graphics, but if you meant
creating external links (graphics or otherwise) then it can do this
too. Other programs to try are

http://www.traction-software.co.uk/pdfusplitde/FEATURES.HTM

and a range of products from http://www.enfocus.com/index.php

Hmm, I'm not sure if it will do all you want but have you checked out
http://www.activepdf.com ?
(remember, this is free, probably worth what you are paying).

shachar,

I'd answer your question, but I've never used this software before, so
I'll just add it as a comment:

another shareware product: pdsplit:
Splits a multipage PDF file in one-page files, or into smaller files
according to bookmarks contained in the file. Cross page links are
modified to cross file links.

Here is a program which purports to split PDF files at bookmarks (or
other points you specify), and also properly adjust the links in the
split files.

http://www.aroundtablesolution.com/arts_pdf_splitter.asp

Or if you need more control:

http://www.aroundtablesolution.com/arts_pdfsplitter_pro.asp

I couldn't find any indication on the site of whether these utilities
can extract common objects from the PDF and share them externally
amongst the split files. You can try their demo software to find out
though, I'm sure.
