I need a Turkish language course, taught during the summer of 2003,
within 1 hour drive from Boston, which includes at least 140 "contact
hours" of instruction and costs under $3600. "Summer 2003" means 2nd
half of June through the _end_ of September; the ideal course would
run during August and September. (The parameters -- at least 140
contact hours, under $3600 -- are _not_ flexible: these are program
requirements).
Thanks in advance for help! |

Thanks for the comments, but unfortunately only a program that meets
all the
conditions I've mentioned would be useful to me -- in Boston, at least
140 "contact hours" of instruction, under $3600. I've already tried
the
Boston Language Institute but their Turkish courses don't have enough
hours (after a short course they suggest private tutoring at $70/hr,
and a 140-hour course comes out to over $9000)

ilya239 -
Thanks for your question.
A couple of things that will help -
1) Do you have a bachelors degree? What in?
2) Do you care what hours (day/night) the course is given?
thanks,

I have a B.S. in Economics and a B.S. in History, but no prior
experience with Turkish -- the course needs to start from the beginner's
level.
The hours during which the course is given do not matter.

The purpose of the course is to be able to read documents in Turkish
-- conversation skills are not important.

Would you accept a program that is more than 1 hour's drive from
Boston. I may have found a program; however, it's about 4 hours away.

Hello ilya239-ga,
Ive found a CD-ROM based course that is the equivalent of a 1st year,
2-semester college course in Beginning Turkish. It is offered by a US
University and is a self-paced program. The price is well within your
range. You can complete it in the Summer 2003 time frame. You can do
it from your home. The only question is whether it would meet your
140 contact hours requirement.
Would such a course meet your needs?

Thanks very much for the suggestions, but unfortunately, "140 contact
hours" means contact with a live instructor, so a CD-ROM program won't
help.
Also, since I'll need to commute daily from Boston, a program that's 4
hours away wouldn't work for me.

The course must meet the requirements of the FLAS fellowship: besides the
requirements above (140 contact hours, under $3600) it must span at least
6 weeks of the summer. "Independent study or study with tutors is not
eligible".
