What was the audience's reaction after hearing Trent Lott's now-famous
comment
at Thurmond's 100th birthday ("...we wouldn't have had all these
problems over all these years, either")? Silence -- boos -- more
applause?

I heard the audio tape a couple times on NPR, but it had been
pointedly edited to cut off sharply after Lott's final word. They
didn't want us to hear
the audience's appluase, I wondered? To answer: just locate an audio
file of the speech which has at least the next few seconds in tact.

Hello.

I downloaded and reviewed the audio and video of Lott's speech from
C-SPAN.
It's the last link on this C-SPAN page:
http://www.c-span.org/search/index.asp?Recordset41_Next=Next&Recordset41_Action=++&Recordset41_Position=FIL%3A%28C2K%20LIKE%20%27%25lott%25%27%29%20OR%20%28Candidate%20LIKE%20%27%25lott%25%27%29%20OR%20%28CurrentEvent%20LIKE%20%27%25lott%25%27%29%20OR%20%28CurrentEvent1%20LIKE%20%27%25lott%25%27%29%20OR%20%28CurrentEvent2%20LIKE%20%27%25lott%25%27%29%20OR%20%28CurrentEvent3%20LIKE%20%27%25lott%25%

The entire video runs one hour, five minutes. Lott's speech begins at
32:00.

Here is how the relevant events appear and sound in the video:

32:48
Lott: "I want to say this about my state. When Strom Thurmond ran for
president, we voted for him. We're proud of it."

32:57
Applause and cheers from the audience.

32:59
Lott: "And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we
wouldn't have had all of these problems over all of these years
either."

33:05
Silence from the audience. No cheers. No applause.

Lott continues to talk for another 6 minutes and 30 seconds. His
remarks are interrupted occasionally by laughter and applause.

Lott's remarks end at 39:42. There is applause from the audience.

Lott then spends an additional minute introducing the next speaker,
Thurmond's son Strom Thurmond Jr. Lott's introduction of Thurmond Jr
ends at 40:39. The audience applauds.

Again, the video is the last link on this C-SPAN page:

search strategy: cspan, video archives search: "lott"

I hope this helps.

Just to clarify, the links in the answer do work correctly.
The link to the Strom Thurmond 100th birthday celebration is the last
link on the page you can visit with this shortened URL from SnipURL:
http://snurl.com/ict

Or go to http://www.cspan.org and search the video archives for
"Lott." The video is the last link on the second page of results.
