Fuz --

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC) has an excellent online
data base that will get you the largest institutions and detailed
information about their capital assets and branches. You can put
together your list of largest banks by using the search capabilities:
Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC)
"Bank Data: Individual Banks"
http://www.fdic.gov/bank/individual/index.html

On that page you'll find a link to the "Institution Directory." When
you click it you'll be taken to the search facility:
FDIC
"Welcome to the FDIC's Financial Insitution Directory"

You'll want to select the first 100 or so largest banks; then make
sure that you enter at least one word (we'd suggest "bank" where the
form has 'BHC Name'). Up comes your list.

You can now use other parts of the database to search for more
detailed management information; to search by states; and by other
financial criteria.

The FDIC also lists banks with trust powers and shows what they have
in management under trust. You can search that database by state,
city, zip code and institution name:
http://www2.fdic.gov/structur/trust/search.cfm

OTHER FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS
-----------------------------

In addition to federally-insured banks, you can also find the largest
savings institutions by using the Office of Thrift Supervision's
website. You'll find about 100 S&Ls in the $1 billion and higher
asset category:
U.S. Treasury Department
Office of Thrift Supervision
http://www.ots.treas.gov/instsql/search-form.cfm

There are about 6,000 federal credit unions and another 3,300 state
credit unions. The National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) has an
index that allows you to find members by state, charter type, by
region or name:
National Credit Union Administration
http://www.ncua.gov/indexdata.html

The National Association of Federal Credit Unions has a list of their
100 largest members from June, 20002:
http://www.nafcu.org/Conent/NavigationMenu/Economic_Trends_Analysis/TOP100-2002J.PDF

A separate organization called the National Association of State
Credit Union Supervisors has its list of 100 largest members from
March, 2002 here:
http://www.nascus.org/resources/scutop100.html

If you have trouble using any of these databases or require a
clarification, please let me know before rating this answer.

Google search strategy:
banks + FDIC
"financial institutions" + "top 100"
