If I want to read my email at med.unc.edu while out of town I use this URL
http://wwwmail.med.unc.edu
This opens up Netscape Messenger Express.
By the time I type in my username and password the window is usually timed out.
What can I do to avoid this time-out error.
Frank Detterbeck, MD
P.S. I am sending this message from my father's computer

Hello,

This might be a long shot but I noticed that the website appears to
get the current date and time from your computer. Make sure that your
computer has the proper date and time by opening up your control panel
and double clicking on "Date and Time."

You might also want to ensure that English - United States is selected
in your regional settings (also in the control panel).

You can also try going to the following page:
http://wwwmail.med.unc.edu/?user=frosch

replacing frosh with your user name and putting in the proper password
and then trying.

Have you had problems with any other computer, or just your father's
computer?

Hello again frosch,

Is there any chance that you are running InterScan security software
from TrendMicro? Interscan Viruswall, Interscan Messaging Security
Suite etc.?

I am trying to help my son solve an email problem.

My son has an email account at a university where he receives all his
email. He uses no other email account. He has no problem accessing his
email while at work. However, when he tries to access his email from
his laptop computer he can open up the email site but by the time he
enters his username and password the window is timed out. His ISP for
his laptop is AOL and he uses whatever browser AOL provides (probably
Netscape). He never uses his AOL account for email. All his email goes
to the university.
There is no timed-out error when he accesses his email from my
desktop.

Is there a way to adjust the time-out period on a laptop?
Or is this a problem with AOL?
Or is the problem with his browser?
Is it possibly due to an incomplete installation of Netscape?
Does AOL always use Netscape?

Thank you for your help.

Here is additional information that may help you:

My son uses Netscape at the university. His address book is in
Netscape.

To access his email from his laptop he first has to connect to AOL. He
thinks that the browser for AOL is not the same as Netscape. He then
opens up MS IE

Hello frosch,

Sorry for not getting back to you but the reason was that I was not
able to find what I consider to be a suitable answer for your problem.

Basically we have isolated this down to one computer. I am not sure
why tutuzdad asked for the browser version, but since we know it works
on Netscape (and not on a computer with IE) there is a better chance
it will work with Netscape Navigator because the email access is a web
version of "Netscape Messenger Express."

Your son could try to download Netscape Navigator for free on the
internet here: http://channels.netscape.com/ns/browsers/download.jsp

I think your best bet would be to contact the computer services
deparment at the university to see if they can help you. I could
probably give you instructions to use Outlook Express to check email
(keeping a copy of the message on the server) which should allow your
son to get emails without any time out errors.

So basically my #1 suggestion is that your son download Netscape
Navigator and try to use that to access the email. If this works, you
could let me know here and I can close up the question.

If this does not work, I could walk you through how to set up an
Outlook Express account.

Also the technical support email address for the University of North
Carolina School of Medicine is mailto:request@med.unc.edu
(this information is found here: http://www.med.unc.edu/contact.htm )

An ideal way for me to help you solve this problem would be for me to
have the user name and password of an account on the server, but this
of course is impossible. If downloading Netscape Navigator does not
work, your best bet would be to contact the School of Medicine
directly or try setting up an outlook express account (in which case
you need to know the mail server address and information on
authentication etc.)

Please respond to this message at your convenience. You can either
remove the question or accept this as an answer. If you need any
clarifications, let me know and I will do my best to further assist
you.

Sorry, I meant that if you decide to contact the school for technical
support you could close the question.

Perhaps another researcher has a better idea if you do not find my
post useful and want to keep waiting for a better response.

Hi frosch,

A simple solution to the problem might be to use the answer I posted
to an email question at this link:

Hello tisme,
I have ordered and received Navigator on a CD which I will forward to
my son tomorrow. If this solves the problem, I will let you know
promptly.
Thank you.

Hello tlspiegel,
I tried www.mail2web.com which works fine on my own email.
It does not work on my son's email even though I use his correct email
address and his password.
I can open his email at wwwmail.med.unc.edu with the same password and
his user name (instead of his email address).
Why would that be?

Hi frosch,

I've been tracking your question, comments, and clarifications and
still have no answer for you. It's certainly a mystery. Hopefully
someone will be able to present a solution. Good Luck!

If anyone can view source the web page of the mentioned URL..There is
reference to the System time of the computer and also to the version
of the Netscape Browser being used.

If everything works fine on another computer, try to reproduce the
conditions as on that comp including computer clock and Netscape
browser versions.

If problem remains,it could be an ISP issue to be sorted between
service provider(AOL) and the email provider(university).Timeout
occurs due to inability of connection to maintain itself.

Here is one possible explanation:

AOL has notorious problems with "sessions" on the Internet. Every
page you surf to through AOL goes through their proxy servers -
basically their gateways to the Internet. The only problem is you
don't know which proxy server you're going through when you go to a
Web site. This creates a huge problem for developers who rely on
sessions to "remember" who you are during your visit to a site.

If you come in to the site on one proxy server, but halfway through
AOL decides to switch to another, the site may have trouble figuring
out who you are and will say your session has expired, or ask you to
log in again.

I should mention that this potentially explains why your son has no
trouble connecting from the desktop, using Netscape's mail program.
Those kinds of programs authenticate themselves against the server
each and every time they connect, so there is no confusion as to who
is there. They also don't keep open connections. Mail programs will
connect to a mail server, say who is checking the mail, download any
waiting mail or upload any written mail waiting to go out, and say
goodbye. On the other hand, Web-based mail is "stateless". It relies
on the Web site's software to remember who each visitor is while
they're "logged in". But you don't have a sustained connection during
that time, so there's a good chance the server might forget who you
are, either because you've been inactive for a long period (timeout),
or your ISP (AOL) is doing some funky stuff to mess it all up. ;)

Let me know if this makes sense.
