Dear barney2-ga;
Thank you for allowing me an opportunity to answer your interesting
question.
Rather than let my research go to waste I chose to go ahead and post
my information as an answer. It will be up to you, who knows much more
about this family than I, to determine who is related to whom. As I
mentioned, I could not find the missing names of John Calvin Watkins
parents but while researching I discovered a number of extremely
promising pieces of information that may very well help you solve this
mystery:
More than four years ago, someone (presumably a relative of yours)
posted this request containing the following information:
http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?john,calvin::watkins::304.html
Am searching for information on John Calvin Watkins b. VA 1770; d. GA
1859; and spouse Jane Webb, also born in VA. Some of their children's
names were: Mary; Mark; Matthew & Luke. There probably are other
children, but we have no hard evidence of them. Would like any
information on siblings of JCW or JW; their parents or families -
anything that we might use to further our search. For sure he was in
GA by 1804, in Jackson Co., probably came into Franklin Co. from SC,
Mary was born there, according to census records. Give me a note if
you have anything that might match
In response, some two years later on August 21, 2000, someone posted
this:
http://genforum.genealogy.com/watkins/messages/2274.html
This is probably a long shot. Matthew Watkins bought land n 1840 in
Cleburne Co. AL Near him were James Watkins, Andrew G. Watkins, and
Walton Watkins.
DO NOT FOLLOW THIS LINEAGE. I BELIEVE THAT THIS FOLLOW UP INFORMATION
IS INCORRECT AND WILL GREATLY MISLEAD YOU! And heres why:
Searching ROOTSWEB (http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi)
I found this recorded information:
Birth/Christening Death/Burial
Name Date Place Date Place Database
WATKINS, John C. 3 MAR 1770 VA 8 MAY 1859 Jackson Co., GA
:af3512
Spouse: Jane
Watkins, John Calvin 3 MAR 1770 Virginia 8 MAY 1859 Jackson County,
GA bwatkins
Spouse: Jane Webb
This lead me to this treasure chest of information indicating that the
follow up response on the Genforum site was incorrect:
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:af3512&id=I2701
As you can see, there exists a family Bible that contains this
information. Several, if not all of these people, may still be alive.
This means that places of burial (by the way, JCW is buried in the
Watkins Family Graveyard, Jackson County, GA) marriages, dates,
lineages and many other things are still known and recorded by some
members of this family.
In addition I uncovered this:
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=bwatkins&id=I001
The earliest record yet found of JCW's residence in Jackson County,
GA is from a Franklin County Court Record re the sale of land by a
person living in Jackson County who was selling land in Franklin
County. The transaction was signed by John C. Watkins, J. P., Jackson
County in 1807. We have copies of land grants, made Feb 16, 1816
(389.25 acres) and Dec 17, 1818 (145 acres), to JCW. Also in "A
Researchers Library of GA History, Genealogy, and Record Sources --
Davis" (located in the LDS Library, San Marcos, TX), there is an
undated report of a land grant of 287.5 acres recorded in "Book AAAA -
Page 32".
To take this research in a different direction, but to confirm that I
am on the right track, I also ran into your data on Jane Webb
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=bwatkins&id=I035
Name: Jane WEBB
Sex: F
Birth: 1 APR 1779 in Virginia
Death: 31 AUG 1854 in Jackson County, GA
Reference Number: W35
Note: The Southern Christian Advocate, 1837-60 Vol 1, Marriage and
Death Notices, reported: "Mrs Jane Watkins died in Jackson County
August 31, 1854, consort of J. C. Watkins in her 77th year. Born in
VA, April 1778". (Our records indicate she was born in 1779)
Records of JCW and his wife are also recorded in the Latter Day Saints
Database here: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp
But I believe your research may be the origin of this information as
well.

unknown:

The 1840 Census index shows three Watkins family members living in
Jackson County GA, ages 21, 29 & 45.
ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/jackson/census/1840/1840indx.txt
The 1850 Census indicated this:
ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/jackson/census/1850/pg0058a.txt
NAME AGE PLACE OF BIRTH
Watkins Luke T. 30 M W Farmer GA
Watkins Amanda L. 25 F W GA
Watkins John C. 5 M W GA
Watkins Celestina J. 3 F W GA
Watkins Jerusha B. 1 F W GA
Watkins John C. 80 M W VA
Watkins Jane 68 F W VA
As expected, this indicates that JCW was still alive as late as 1850
but interestingly reveals children previously unrecorded in the GEDcom
files.
Other family members in this Census can be found here:
ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/jackson/census/1850/pg0046b.txt

Now, about Virginia I believe you may be right, or at least very
close to be right, in your assertion that Benjamin Watkins, the elder,
may in fact be related somehow to JCW. In the Alphabetical Rent Roll
of Virginia 1704/05 these people appear:
http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/va/1704va.txt?sourceid=00224698996451495155
Watkins Benj King & Queen County, 1704
Watkins Edward Henrico County, 1705
Watkins Edwd King & Queen County, 1704
Watkins Henry Sen Henrico County, 1705
Watkins Jno Isle Wighte County, 1704
Watkins Jos Henrico County, 1705
Watkins Philip King & Queen County, 1704
Watkins Rebecka York County, 1704
Watkins Richard Surry County, 1704
Watkins Tho Junr King & Queen County, 1704
Watkins Thomas Essex County, 1704
Watkins Thomas Henrico County, 1705
Watkins Thomas Norfolk County, 1704
Watkins Wm Henrico County, 1705
Watkins Wm King & Queen County, 1704
Watkins Wm Parish of St. Peters and St. Paul, 1704
Given that this is a record of rentals STATEWIDE for the period
mentioned, it is only logical to assume that one or more of these
people could very well be related to your JCW. The question is how?
Since the date is so far in advance of JCWs birth, and life
expectancy in those days was not as great as it is now, what we may in
fact be looking at one or more of these records, not be his father,
but perhaps his grandfather or even great-grandfather.
The Virginia Pension Roll of 1835 indicates a John Watkins aged 78 of
Bedford County, VA (among other Watkins) receiving a government
pension on 09/21/1819, which COULD, theoretically, place him at the
age to be JCWs father or grandfather but of course there is not way
here to confirm that:
http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/va/pensions/vapen_w.txt
JOHN WATKINS

QUARTERMASTER SERGEANT
VIRGINIA LINE
$96.00 ANNUAL ALLOWANCE
$1,397.67 AMOUNT RECEIVED

AGE 78
To add to the missed generations I am finding, some very early Watkins
individuals seemed to turn up very often in my research, namely these
in Henrico County, VA who, one or both, may be the ancestors of even
the oldest Watkins you have found to date, Henry Watkins b. 1638 and
Lewis Watkins b. 1641.
HENRICO COUNTY, VIRGINIA: BEGINNINGS OF ITS FAMILIES (Jan. 1916)
ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/va/henrico/bios/earlyfam2.txt
They are mentioned again in this 1679 Tythables For Henrico County
ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/va/henrico/census/1679tyth.txt
I believe (unconfirmed) one of these may be the forefather of your
family line.
As a source of much of this information you can go to this link

and probably search for weeks.
Again, I am sorry that I could not find the exact name that you were
looking for but as you can see I spent a considerable amount of time
on this question and it appears that finding the information your are
seeking will be difficult I not impossible to find using the internet
alone. I encourage you to find your relatives and compare notes if you
can. I hope this information opens new avenues for you to find the
answers you are looking for. If you have any questions about my
research please post a clarification request prior to rating the
answer. Since the answer I provided did not definitively answer your
question feel free to post a clarification request if you feel it is
necessary before you rate or reject the answer and I will be notified.
Otherwise, I welcome your rating and your final comments and I look
forward to working with you again in the near future. Thank you for
