In the last two decades of the 20th century computers played at least a minor roll in perhaps half of the discoveries made world wide. The percentage is almost as high for the first 8 decades if you use a very loose definition of computer (slide rule, adding machine) and consider discoveries by scientists and engineers in the USA only. The percentage is much lower if you include the daily discoveies made world wide by the billion children under age sixteen. It would be difficult to define first time ever discoveries, if that is what you had in mind. Some important discoveries of the late twentieth century are DVD, CCD = charge coupled devise, water on Mars, extra solar system planets... Most of what appears to be new has roots in the early 20th century or even earier. Neil |
