Hi! Thanks for the question.

Your answer could be found and be enriched by reading on the "U.S.
Declaration of War with Germany" by then President Woodrow Wilson. A
copy of the primary document is available at the First World War
website.

At first the US was neutral but when Germany endangers its commercial
ships, the US joined the first great war.

The goals and sub goals mentioned in the speech include the following:

1. Protect US merchant ships for trade

2. Cooperate with other nations at war with Germany

3. Organize and mobilize all resources of the country to win the war
and sustain the nation

4. The use and mobilization of more able bodied men for the war.

Overall, the goal of the US in joining the war according to this
document was to protect democracy.

Some popular slogans were War to make the world safe for Democracy and
War to end Wars. There were of course some more or less hidden
adjendas, such as increase corporate profit and certain rich and
powerful persons increased their power. In my opinion the USA could
have stayed out of this war, and most others, if we had controled the
actions of certain rich and powerful USA individuals and refrained
from giving aid to the enemies of the Kiasar. Neil

Of course the REAL reasons included:

Sabotage within the US by German agents

Unrestricted submarine warfare in the Atlantic

Many American companies had supported the Allies with supplies and credits

Concerns that Germany would capture strategic oil resources if left unchecked
