Was there a film version made of the novel Middlemarch by George
Eliot? If so, what is the title? Why can't I find it anywhere? Did it
have a different title? Did reviewers like it? Thank you very much.

George Eliot's "Middlemarch" was filmed in the UK in 1994. The film
was shown in the United States as part of PBS's "Masterpiece Theatre."
As far as I can determine, this is the only filmed version of the
novel.

Information about this production is available here:

Internet Movie Database: Middlemarch
http://us.imdb.com/Title?0108858

Here are links to some reviews of the film's video release:

Epinions: Middlemarch

I highly recommend this beautiful adaptation of the novel. It is
richly textured, faithful to most plot details, and features an
extraordinary cast of British actors, including the wonderful Robert
Hardy (previously in "All Creatures Great and Small") and Patrick
Malahide, best known for playing Ngaio Marsh's Inspector Alleyn in a
celebrated television series.

My search strategy included a visit to the Internet Movie Database and
a Google search using the keywords "Middlemarch," "film," and
"reviews."

I hope this information is useful. If any of the links do not
function, or if further assistance is needed, please request
clarification before rating my answer.

Best regards,

I would like to find out if it is possible to rent this anywhere in
the Bay Area. I am really happy to pay for this follow up question,
but I would love for YOU to answer it, if this is possible. Please
let me know and if you can do it, please add another $2.50 to my card.
Thanks. If that isn't enough, let me know.

Thank you very much for the five-star rating!

Regarding the matter of renting "Middlemarch" in the Bay Area, my
online searches haven't been helpful. I suggest that you post a new
question asking where you might find a rental. There are several
Google Answers Researchers who live in northern California, and they
may be able to make some phone calls that would help.

In case you are interested in owning "Middlemarch," I found some nice
prices on used VHS tapes:

Half.ebay.com

I do hope you are able to watch this truly superb version of
"Middlemarch."
