Is there anywhere in SF to take a good reupholstery class - for an
absolute beginner?

There are two Courses available at the City College of San Francisco:

The upholstery program is designed for both the career minded student
and for home hobbyists. For either path, the program emphasizes a
professional result using the latest techniques, tools and materials.

FASH 6003. Upholstery (63 hrs) 
Introduction to upholstering furniture and to making furniture
starting from the frame. Use of tools, cutting and fitting different
fabrics, fillings and placement of fabrics.

FASH 6055. Upholstery Trade (90 hrs) 
Upholstering as a trade. Focusing on the skills necessary for

I checked for UC extension courses and they do not provide upholstery courses.

At the Palo Alto Adult School there are upholstery classes for
beginners but unfortunately they are full for the winter. Perhaps they
will have openings in the spring.

UPHOLSTERING: Basic Techniques 
Learn techniques to update a contemporary piece or recover an antique
and get started on a wonderful hobby. Refurbish your furniture,
rebuild old worn springs, change the style and/or bring a chair up to
date. Antique techniques are taught when needed.

It was great to receive one option, though in my experience
historically Google answers gives serveral options.
