Greetings, lintama!

I was able to locate for you the following Daily Sun on-line articles
which refer to George Nackard and/or the Express Stop Varsity Gasser:

------------------------------------------

"Homeless staying put" by Michael Marizco, Sun Staff Reporter (July
23, 2002)
"Less than a half dozen homeless people who have participated in the
housing program at a local motel have returned to the woods since the
forest's reopening Saturday, officials said Monday...
Aaron, who didn't want his last name used, said he works at Varsity
Gasser but plans to move up to Portland soon where the rent isn't as
high but wages are comparable to Flagstaff."

"Police log 5/29/02" (May 29, 2002)
"Armed robbery:
A local gas station was robbed at gunpoint Monday night. According to
Flagstaff police reports, a clerk at the Varsity Gasser, 1020 S.
Milton Road, said a man walked into the store just after 9 p.m. and
asked for a pack of cigarettes. When the clerk turned back around
after getting the cigarettes, the man had placed a black gun with a
long barrel on the counter. 'This is a robbery; empty the drawer,
please,' the clerk told police the robber said. The clerk promptly
emptied the drawer and gave the robber an undisclosed amount of cash.
The robber then walked out of the gasser and headed toward the
Northern Arizona University campus. The robber was described as a
Hispanic or Native American, 6-feet, 18 to 25 years of age, 175 pounds
with black hair and a mustache. He was wearing a black hooded zip-up
parka, black pants and black snow-type boots.
Police booked a video surveillance tape into evidence. The tape showed
the gloveless robber touching areas in the store, which were then
dusted for prints and also booked into evidence. The matter is under
investigation."

"Personal loans vault Donaldson into campaign fund-raising lead" (May
12, 2002)
"Following is a list of mayoral campaign contributors of $100 or more
from Feb. 21 through May 1, 2002:
... Also, George Nackard, Karen Nackard..."

"Gunman robs Hilltop Gasser" by Larry Hendricks, Sun Staff Reporter
(July 21, 2001)
"A convenience store and gas station just north of the city was robbed
at gunpoint Thursday night. There were no injuries. Paul Teran,
detective for the Coconino County Sheriff's Office, said the Hilltop
Gasser, 7133 N. Hwy. 89, was robbed of an undetermined amount of money
just after 9:30 p.m. '(The suspect) walks in and demands money from
the clerk at gunpoint,' Teran said. The clerk gave the suspect the
money without incident. A witness near the station said that the
suspect walked in, then quickly walked out and ran south toward the
city. The clerk described the suspect as male in his late teens or
early 20s, 5-foot-5 to 5-foot-7, 170 pounds, wearing dark clothing
with a hooded top. He wore a blue bandana over his face. The gun was
described as a 'small-caliber weapon.' Teran said deputies were helped
by members of the Flagstaff Police Department and a Department of
Public Safety helicopter in their search of the suspect. Teran said
evidence was found in the area, but it was not known if the evidence
was used in the crime. He would not specify what the evidence was. The
suspect is still at large, and the search continues. If anybody has
any information about the robbery, contact Detective Paul Teran at the
sheriff's office at 774-4523."

To make sure that the above story indeed referred to George Nackard's
Varsity Gasser, I looked up the gas station in the Yellow Pages, and
you can see on the map that, while the address given is on Milton
Road, the station is located on or near Hwy 89.

"Local lawmakers worked across party lines" by Jeff Tucker, Sun Staff
Reporter (May 12, 2001)
"The smoke has cleared from the Capitol Building and the offices of
the three District 2 representatives are quiet -- for now.
The legislative session was a learning experience for two freshmen
House members and a chance for District 2's veteran of state politics
to settle into a new job in the Senate...
Other successes mentioned by District 2 legislators:
- Worked together to get Arizona Department of Environmental Quality
involved in the eventual cleanup of the Chateau Royale trailers left
on George Nackard's property."

------------------------------------------

"Not cleaned up yet" by Jeff Tucker, Sun Staff Reporter (October 13,
2000)
"It has been nearly a year since the city of Flagstaff and Coconino
County swept through the Chateau Royale trailer park looking for
health and safety violations.
Since then, the old trailers have been replaced by higher-quality new
manufactured housing units.
But remnants of Chateau's past still reside in Flagstaff and the
trailer park's neighbor, George Nackard, isn't happy about it."

------------------------------------------

"Patronize low prices" Letter to the Editor by Craig Hutton (November
24, 1999)
"In reference to the Nov. 1 article about George Nackard causing a
lowering of the price of gasoline in Flagstaff, I have been
patronizing Varsity Gasser since its opening in gratitude to Mr.
Nackard. The solution to putting pressure on gas station owners to
keep margins fair is to patronize the stations that offer lowest gas
price for your grade. Higher-priced stations would immediately
experience a sales volume drop, demonstrating consumers' price
sensitivity."

------------------------------------------

"Maverick at the pump" by Scott Walters, Sun Business Editor (November
1, 1999)
"Gun slinging and gasoline, surely a potent combination if ever there
was one. Two years ago this month, maverick businessman George Nackard
was happy to pull the trigger, touching off a gas price war that lit
up most of Flagstaff."
http://www.azdailysun.com/non_sec/nav_includes/story.cfm?storyID=7268&syr=1999

------------------------------------------

I also found this article, but I believe that the reference to George
is a typographical error, as it is *Joe* Nackard who is the City
Zoning Commissioner:
"Planners stand pat on sign code" by Jeff Tucker, Sun Staff Reporter
(January 12, 2000)
"The Flagstaff city sign code should remain the way it is, with a
maximum height of 8 feet for most new signs.
That was the message sent to the City Council by the Flagstaff
Planning and Zoning Commission as it reached the end of a lengthy
public meeting Tuesday night...
Commissioners George Nackard and Ron Grittman both voted against the
motions, saying that non-conforming signs create an unfair advantage
for those businesses."

lintama,

The article you are seeking, "There's A Gas War Going On and One Flag
Man Says He's Responsible", was written by G.E. Roybal, Arizona Daily
Sun Staff Reporter, and appeared in the Arizona Daily Sun on Friday,
December 19, 1997.

Many thanks to Sun Staff Reporter Larry Hendricks, who ever so kindly
found this article by going through their print archive (their online
archives only go back to 1999, and 1997 has not yet been microfilmed).

This article will be available for a short time at the URL shown
below, with the express permission of Randy Wilson, Editor at the
Arizona Daily Sun. I recommend you save a copy immediately to your
computer hard drive (and print it as well, if you wish).
