Name the team that will win Super Bowl XXXVII. A wrong answer gets you a
one-star rating, a right answer will get you a five-star rating and a
humongous tip (a double humongous tip if the winning team is one that
doesn't get a first round bye in the playoffs)

Let's see ... this question expires January 29, and the Super Bowl is
January 26 ... so if we can wait this question out, some lucky
Researcher will get 5 stars and a humongous tip? ;-)

Or should I just pick the Jets now and take a chance on lowering my
rating?

By the way, the Philadelphia Eagles have the best chance of all the
above teams :)

tar heel,

Unfortunately, this attempt is not quite enough to be a satisfactory
answer. I need a definite answer, *which* team will win? Some
reasoning behind your selection would be appreciated as well.

hailstorm,

Well, it was worth a shot :)

Here is how I see things:

Donovan McNabb should be back in time, since the Eagles have a first
round bye, for the playoffs. The Eagles have homefield advantage
throughout the playoffs and the Vet is a very, very tough place for
visiting teams. Looking at the rest of the NFC:

NY Giants:
While the Giants did defeat the Eagles this weekend, Tiki Barber has
been fumble prone this year (his career as well) as he showed
Saturday. On top of that, I don't think Kerry Collins has it in him
to take the G-Men the whole way. That game Saturday was at the Vet,
the Eagles win by 20

SF Giants:
Very suspect defense and only one true offensive threat in Terrell
Owens.

Green Bay Packers:
Had the Pack won homefield advantage, I don't think my pick would have
been as obvious. That and with Donald Driver injured and the woes of
the Pack away from Lambeau, I don't think they can do it this year.
However, if anyone can, it is the Packers

Tampa Bay:
Backed into the playoffs. Jon Gruden has done great things with the
Bucs this season, including breaking the below 40 degree jinx last
night. However, they have to go to Philly and it will be cold and the
Eagles have run the Bucs out of the playoffs the last two years.
That, and in those two games, the Bucaneers have failed to score a
touchdown

Atlanta Falcons:
Michael Vick is amazing. He is redefining how teams play defense.
However, when your number one receiver is Brian Finneran (who??) and
the Browns stop 1st and goal, there are question. Coaching will be a
factor here and I think Andy Reid is a much better coach than Dan
Reeves.

As for the AFC,
New York Jets:
Chad Hutchinson has amazing numbers and they are a fun team to watch.
Good on both sides of the ball. However, youth at several key
positions will be tough. Herm Edwards has this team believing they can
win, which you can never discount, but I think when push comes to
shove, experience wins out

Cleveland Browns:
I think they have a better chance with Kelly Holcomb than they would
have with Tim Couch. However, regardless of that, the Browns don't
get past next weekend

Pittsburgh Steelers:
Way too mistake prone. Again, experience should come into play and
while I like Tommy Maddox and Amos Zeroue, I am not sold on them after
last year. Bettis getting healthy could help. I think they may get
to the AFC Championship and possibly the Superbowl, but not enough to
hold McNabb and Staley.

Indianapolis Colts:
Famous for their slow starts this year, they can ill afford to let
that happen in the playoffs. Manning will go down as a great one, but
he has been getting down on himself early and the Philly defense would
eat him alive if that happened.

Oakland Raiders:
Gannon is a legitimate MVP contender. However, this is a very old
team on both sides of the ball. Their losing streaks have shown that.
Not gonna happen for the Silver and Black this year.

Tennesse Titans:
Great story this year. Going 1 for their first 6 then 10 of their
last 11. How long can the ride go on? I think long enough to get
them to the Superbowl, but it stops there. McNair is beat up, but
still the closest thing to McNabb the AFC has. His health is key

So, summarizing, Tennessee vs Philly in the Superbowl and the Eagles
win in an entertaining, yet one sided game, 28-13

OK, I've got you down as a definite for Eagles then!

BTW, how did Tennessee end up playing 17 games? :-p

Oops! You are correct. Nice math, huh?

Well, you nailed the Indianapolis analysis. Slow start indeed...but I
hear they racked up quite a few touchdowns towards the end, once the
Jets and the fans had left the stadium...

Much as I want your Philly prediction to be true (for reasons that I,
uh, won't mention here), the most appealing matchup I can think of
would be an Atlanta vs Pittsburgh rematch.

Yeah...pretty sad games yesterday, though the ones today were
something else. The Giants going down helped my Philly prediction.

Well, it looks like (with about 6 minutes left in the Philly game) you
will keep this question alive for another week. Your runner-up pick
Titans eked out a win too, though I would have been much more
interested in Tommy Maddox continuing his quest to become the only
quarterback ever to take teams to the NFL and XFL titles.

So far so good. My picks are right inline with what I figured. I
have picked the AFC and the NFC championship games, though I did think
that Green Bay would have played as opposed to Atlanta this weekend,
but the end results are the same.
