Hello,

This are the closest official numbers that I was able to find:
"Only two weeks after it became available, AOL 8.0 has been downloaded
more than 5 million times, surpassing last year's AOL 7.0 record, and
has been used by more than 8 million AOL Screen Names."
SOURCE: "New AOL(r) 8.0 Sets Record with More Than 5 Million Downloads
by AOL Members in First Two Weeks" (dated October 23, 2002)
http://media.aoltimewarner.com/media/press_view.cfm?release_num=55252821

Note that depending on your definition of a "user" the answer is
either 5 million or 8 million. (One AOL account has several screen
names available.)

I contacted AOL directly and was told that this was the only
information released at this time regarding the number of users using
AOL 8.0. You should also be aware that AOL 8.0 is not yet available in
most countries outside of the United States (for example Canada).

I was unable to get any information on whether or not there was an
upcoming press release that would update this number.

There are several websites which used this press release:

"AOL Claims Record Downloads With Version 8.0"
http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,106250,00.asp

"New AOL 8.0 Sets Record With More Than 5 Million Downloads b..."

Search Strategy:

aol downloads

aol downloads 8 OR 8.0
://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=aol+downloads+8+OR+8.0

Contacted AOL directly.

If I use the 5-8 million answer, what percentage range is this? (how
many aol users in all?)

Hello,

Sorry about not providing that in the original answer.

"AOL's 35 million members have weighed in [..]" (dated December 12, 2002)
http://media.aoltimewarner.com/media/press_view.cfm?release_num=55252921

I also verified this number by contacting AOL directly.

So basically the range is 14.3 and 22.9%.

Please let me know if you need further clarifications.

I would suggest verifying this again with AOL, as often AOL claims to
have 35 million users they mean usernames. Each AOL user can have 5 or
more usernames, therefore real number falls way below as far as amount
of customers.
