Hello jim1946-ga,

Congratulations on your son’s imminent graduation. He is fortunate
that he has a career goal in mind that can be clearly defined and
described. I’ve collected a variety of resources for you/him that will
help you get oriented to the jobs available in sports marketing,
especially golf and basketball. These job posting sites may not yield
specific jobs that meet his needs, but they will be very useful for
identifying companies and industry segments as well as job titles and
functional areas that might be of interest. Whatever company or job
looks interesting is a good jumping off point for conducting more
detailed research in order to get familiar with industry issues and
the language/jargon used by these companies. Identifying specific
organizations will also help to jump-start your son’s networking
efforts. Encourage him to talk to everyone he knows about his
aspirations and the companies that look interesting to him.

I note that many of the job boards in this industry are fee-based and
promise you access to jobs not available on the open market. I would
be cautious about these. Normally the job seeker should not be paying
for the services of job boards, recruiters or employment agencies. I
would do some background checking on these before paying for any
subscriptions.

Since your son is in the early stages of job search, I suggest that he
check in with his college career center to see what services they have
to offer. They may have experience with specialized resources for his
targeted industry. They will also help with developing a targeted job
search campaign, help him develop prospect lists of companies and
suggest ways to network for personal connections into the hidden job
market. I have a feeling that most jobs in this industry might never
make it to the open job posting market. The career center may have a
program set up where they connect new grads with alums to help with
the job search.

I wish your son great success as he launches his career.
