Can I get step-by-step instructions on moving all mail and address
book (whole profile I guess)from Netscape 7.0 on the "old" PC running
Win98 to "new" laptop running XP Professional? Both are on the LAN,
if that helps. Thanks.

Hi esarkissian,

I found the following information in "Netscape 7 Help", I hope it is
what you are looking for.

1. While on your "old" PC: Exporting Address Books

"You can export a Netscape address book if you later want to import it
into another user profile, move it to another computer, or use it with
another program that can import address books. You can export an
address book to one of these file formats: Netscape (.ldif),
tab-delimited (.tab), comma-separated (.csv), or text (.txt) formats.

To export an address book, begin from the Address Book window:

   1. Select the address book that you want to export.
   2. Open the Tools menu, and choose Export.
   3. In the Export Address Book dialog box, browse to the location
where you want to save the address book file.
[save it in your Network Neighborhood for easy retrieval]
   4. Choose the file format for the exported address book (.ldif,
comma-separated, or tab-delimited).
   5. Enter a name for the address book file. Be sure to include the
appropriate file extension (.ldif, .csv, .tab, or .txt).
   6. Click Save."

2. While on your "new" PC: Importing Mail Messages

To import mail messages from Netscape Communicator, Outlook, Outlook
Express, or Eudora, begin from the Mail window:

   1. Open the Tools menu, and choose Import. You see the Import
Wizard.
   2. Follow the instructions to import mail messages.

For Netscape Communicator, the wizard imports a copy of all
Communicator mail folders included under Local Folders. Imported mail
is added as a new folder under Local Folders in the Mail window. (The
Communicator mail folders still remain in their original location).

Importing Mail Settings

To import mail settings from Outlook, Outlook Express, or Eudora,
begin from the Mail window:

   1. Open the Tools menu, and choose Import. You see the Import
Wizard.
   2. Follow the instructions to import mail settings.

To browse Netscape 7 Help, click on "Help" on the right-hand side of
the top bar and than "Help and Support Center (F1) and than "Using
Netscape Mail".

I hope this helps - if I've misunderstood your question or if you need
clarification, please get back in touch before rating my answer.

Thank you,
hummer

Hummer, the "import" commands only work with mail/info that reside on
the same computer. It doesn't import from the "old" computer. Your
suggestion wouldn't work, unless there's a way to export the mail
first from the "old" pc to the laptop.

Hi Ed,

Right you are, sorry about that. But you did manage to export your
address book? If so, then at least we are half-way there.

I am just on my way out the door - I will have another look upon my
return in a few hours, I hope that is ok. Thanks for posting the
clarification -

Happy New Year!

Hi again Ed,

1. On the laptop, make a back-up of the entire Netscape User Profile
that is on the W98 computer, via the LAN.
2. Create a new User Profile on the laptop with the exact same name as
your old one.
3. Restore the back-up to the laptop (overwrite the laptop's new User
Profile).
4. Confirm that the "Read Only" designation is not checked on your new
folder.

If you have any questions about any of the steps, just let me know and
I'll try to help. If for some reason this doesn't work for you, let
me know that too (before rating this answer) and I'll ask Google to
remove my answer (at no cost to you) to make room for another
researcher. Either way, let me know how it goes!

Hummer,

I'm not aware of any way to create a backup of the profiles other than
to copy and paste the profile folder from one computer to the other.
I tried that but the laptop Profile Manager doesn't recognize the
profile. (the name doesn't come up in the list)

Hi Ed,

Good to hear from you - I was just thinking about you this morning and
wondering how you made out.

Try this on the W98 machine (that is what I have, so I can tell you
the exact steps - the laptop may be slightly different).

1. Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Back Up
2. Tick off "Create a New Back Up Job"
3. Tick off "Back Up Selected Files, Folders, Drive"
4. Click the plus signs by:
5. C/Program/Netscape/
6. Tick off the box next to "Users"
7. Click "Next"
8. Tick "All Selected Files"
9. Click "Next"
10. Choose where to put it (Network Neighborhood would make it easy to
find).
11. Click "Next"
12. Tick off both "Compare" & "Compress" boxes.
13. Click "Next"
14. Name the file (Users)
15. Click Start

When it is finished, you should have a backup of your User Profile
including email.

The only problem I can foresee is a W98/XPPro conflict, if any. That
is why I suggested making the back-up from the XP machine, however, it
probably isn't necessary. To use the back up you just made -

1. First "share" the folder you just made.
2. Go to the XP machine and make sure you can see the folder in
Network Neighborhood. If all is well, here you go.... On the XP
machine - (this all may vary slightly from W98)
3. Create a new User Profile on the laptop with the exact same name as
above (User) (It is very important that the name is exactly the same).
4. Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Back Up
5. Tick off "Restore Backed Up Files"/ OK
6. Browse to the User folder on the W98 machine and follow the
directions from there, overwriting the laptop's new User folder.
If all goes well, it will "restore" the new User folder that you just
made on the XP machine with the backed up User folder that is on the
W98 machine.
7. Confirm that the "Read Only" designation is not checked on your new
folder.

If it were me, I would prefer using the XP machine to make the back
up. You would share "C" on the W98 machine first, then -
Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Back-up on the XP machine.
You would then find the User folder to back up on the W98 machine and
save it to the XP machine.

If this is all too much info, let me know and we'll take it step by
step. If you can get as far as making a back up on either machine,
feel free to let me know how it went and we'll take it from there. It
probably sounds horribly confusing but once you do it, it will all
make sense!

Good luck - I'll be waiting to hear back from you with good news!

Hummer,

thanks for your perseverance! Unfortunately, I ran out of time and
had to call Netscape tech support before you posted your final
solution, but I'm sure it would have worked. I actually learned
something anyway- I didn't know you could do specific back-ups that
way. I'm sure that will be useful someday! Thanks for all your the
help.
