Question ID: 135284
I'm told that Lemongrass Oil is used in the manufacturing of many
different types of products, from cleaners to foods. I believe that I
have an inexpensive source for this oil, and want to look for North
American buyers.

1.) What are the different manufacturing uses for this product?
2.) What North American manufacturing companies buy this in sizeable
quantities, and who can I contact for purchasing information?

Thanks for your help!

Dear tupty-ga;

Thank you for allowing me an opportunity to answer your interesting
question.

You were told right! Lemongrass (Latin: cymbopogon flesuous) oil is
indeed one of nature’s multipurpose items. It is used, as you
mentioned, in a variety of products. It is said to revitalize the
body; relieve some of the symptoms of jetlag, help headaches and
symptoms of nervous exhaustion and relieve some stress-related
conditions. Some manufacturers also believe that it is useful with
respiratory infections, sore throats, laryngitis, fever, colitis,
indigestion and gastro-enteritis. Lemongrass oil supposedly helps tone
the muscles and loose skin, relieves muscle pain to some degree and
helps those who have problems with poor circulation. Some
manufacturers also use it as an environmentally sound insect
repellant, protecting both humans and pets from fleas, ticks and lice.
In other industries, the oil is used in products that treat oily skin,
acne, athlete's foot and excessive perspiration.

Basically, lemongrass oil is used in products such as analgesics,
anti-depressants, antiseptics, astringents, carminatives, deodorants,
diuretics, fungicides, galactagogues, insecticides, aromatherapy and
tonics. More common use, especially in North America where herbal
medicine is not as widely practiced as it is in other societies,
include fragrance for perfumes and citrus type soaps, room freshener
and pot-pourri scent and is occasionally used as an exotic spice or
health food ingredient. Any of these markets would make excellent
targets for domestic distribution and volume sales.

Some examples of actual manufacturers who use lemongrass oil in their
products, and presumably purchase the substance in quantity for the
manufacturing purposes, include:

SEARCH STRATEGY

SEARCH ENGINE USED:

Google ://www.google.com

SEARCH TERMS USED:

I used the following search terms in the Google search engine:

“Lemongrass oil”

“With lemongrass oil”

“Containing lemonsgrass oil”

Essential “lemongrass oil”

Pure “Lemongrass oil”

Ultimately, it will be up to you to determine what is suitable for
your target market but it appears that the “pure” oil market would be
the most likely to buy the substance in quantity for obvious reasons
(volume, availability, no import tax, etc.). If you have access to a
source that can provide high volume at wholesale prices you may be
sitting on a little gold mine if you play your cards right. Below you
will see several of my more successful search results, which you can
repeat at your leisure to discover many more than I could ever have
listed here for you. You will clearly see that there are dozens upon
dozens of services, manufacturers and retailers that either use
lemongrass oil in the creation of their products or use quantities of
the pure oil for other purposes:

Thanks tutuzdad - I will rate this question, but also would like a bit
more quick info: Are there products made by the big consumer goods,
foods or medical companies (Procter & Gamble, Kraft, Johnson &
Johnson) that use Lemongrass oil too. When I first started this
"search", I thought that there might have been.

Can you find anything like that in your searching?

I will certainly look in that direction for you. Please give me a bit
of time to study this particular aspect of the research and I will get
back to you as soon as I know more.

Dear tupty-ga:

After receiving your request for clarification I immediatley began an
exhaustive search for premiere manufacturers of brand name products
the contain variations of lemongrass oil, namely CYMBOPOGON CITRATUS
DC AND CYMBOPOGON FLEXUOSUS OIL; LEMONGRASS OIL (CYMBOPOGON CITRATUS
DC AND CYMBOPOGON FLEXUOSUS); CYMBOPOGON FLEXUOSUS OIL. Unfortunatley,
I was unable to establish any kind of relationhip whatsoever between
this compound and any brand name products of the caliber you
mentioned.

It seems that the primary users of this product, as it pertains to
manufacturing of products, would be companies ranging from the mid to
low-level variety, in terms of popularity or notariety, in the
production of items intended for the herbal and cosmemtic industry.

Good luck on your project;
