Question ID: 135788
1) How many home computers are there in the US?
2) How many corporate computers (servers and desktops) are there in
the US?
3) Most recent numbers you can find for the number of Linux computers
(home and corporate)--either absolute numbers or percentages are fine.

I'll also tip $5 for each of the following:

1) How many home computers are there in the world?
2) How many corporate computers are there in the world?
3) The percentages for home computer sales increase/decrease over the
last few years. (1 year is acceptable, but more is better)
4) The percentages for corporate computer sales increase/decrease over
the last few years. (1 year is acceptable, but more is better)

Many thanks in advance!

whitehawke..

Wow..Interesting question. Here we go:

1) How many home computers are there in the US?
2) How many corporate computers (servers and desktops) are there in
the US?

According the to Computer Industry Almanac, in 2001, there were 175
million PCs in use in the United States with 50.4% being in the home,
so there were just over 88 million PCs in homes and about the same
number coporately.

3) Most recent numbers you can find for the number of Linux computers
(home and corporate)--either absolute numbers or percentages are fine

This number is wide and varying and tough to nail down as there are so
many different "flavors" of Linux. A March 2001 study showed that
28.5% of the web servers running public web sites were operating on
Linux

An IDC study showed that in 2001, Microsoft held a huge lead in the
client operating environment with 92% of the install base and 41% of
the install base in the server operating environment while Linux had
only a 2% market share.

1) How many home computers are there in the world?
2) How many corporate computers are there in the world?
According to the Computer Industry Almanac, there were 603 million PCs
in use around the world in 2001, with 45.1% being in the home, or
around 272 million. Using these numbers, that would leave
approximately 271,953,000 PCs used coporately.

3) The percentages for home computer sales increase/decrease over the
last few years. (1 year is acceptable, but more is better)
4) The percentages for corporate computer sales increase/decrease over
the last few years. (1 year is acceptable, but more is better)

The same study showed that in 2000, there were approximately
503,000,000 PCs in use around the world with about 218 million in
homes. The is approximately a 20% jump in home used PCs. In 1995,
there were about 229 million PC's in use with 80 million in the home,
so an increase of about 71%.

It also showed that in 2007, they are expecting the worldwide number
to be 1.15 billion PCs to be in use worldwide with 601 million of
those being used in the home.

I hope the above information is helpful. If you need any additional
clarification, please let me know.
