I need some help with adding a second disk drive to my PC, running
Windows 98SE. Here's what I've done so far:

1. Installed second disk (IBM Deskstar 60GXP) into second drive bay,
linked to intermediate connector on wide cable that goes to main hard
drive.

2. Changed jumpers on new drive from factory-supplied primary to
'slave' (but there are various other options I don't understand!)

3. Opened up a DOS session, and run FDISK. Two drives are displayed.
I've created an extended DOS partition on the second (new) disk, with
no logical partitions. That ran OK, and FDISK now reports the
partition on the new disk.

4. Re-booted.

The new drive does not appear in My Computer, as I'd expect it to. I
still see C:(old drive), D: (CD) and E: (Zip drive).

Can you step me through from here, please?

Dear manchester-ga,

It appears from your detailed description that there's just one little
step missing. When partitioning a disk for DOS/Windows use, an
extended DOS partition isn't actually a "drive" - in the Windows sense
- at all, but a container for "Logical Drives", which are. It's a
somewhat awkward technique to let you have more DOS/Windows
"partitions" on a disk than will fit in the partition table.

You need to run FDISK again, and select the option to create a Logical
Drive in the Extended DOS partition. Let it create one of the maximum
possible size when it prompts you.

Exit FDISK and reboot.

You should then see the new drive in My Computer. Format it, selecting
FAT32, and that should be it!

If this answer isn't quite what you're looking for, please feel free
to request a clarification.

Hope this helps,
